  • 1983 Château Balestard La Tonnelle

12/31/2019 -- With left over Prime rib. New years Eve. Decanted minimal sediment. Brown brick color. Great nose. But the palate Was almost terrible at first (would give it a 78). Then over 30 minutes it opened up and actually became quite good !! (90). Formerly big St. Emillion, now a mere shadow of itself - moderate, elegant , Long palate, expressive, even complex. Dried fruits and cassis. Remained very good for 60-90 more minutes then faded. Next time for last bottle, decant an hour ahead. Don't worry about the age.

  • 1998 Spring Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

10/11/2017 -- First bottle since purchase. Minimal sediment. Rich dark purple. Nose of leather and hints of burnt rubber -- not offputting, but there, Still very tight and tannic. Took several hours to open up. By 12 hours was a beautiful black cherries and mocha nose with a palate of dark fruits with graphite, pencil lead and hints of pine needles with a long 40-second finish. Medium to full bodied. PUshing drink by date out another 8 yeaars from 2018 to 2025.... or just decant 8-12 hours in advance.

  • 1993 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate

Took to Bos Tarus in Bend a steak house with Japanese Waygu beef... was a Root day, so I didn't expect much and had a backup. ... Turned out to be A Phenomenal wine. Some have said over the hill here and it did start out slow and a bit closed but gradually opened up beautifully at about 90 minutes. Was GREAT for 90 more. Not a dense, in your face heavy fruited tannic Cab, but an elegant, woody, wine with dark fried fruits and soft tannins. But MOST importantly -- This is an ABSOLUITELY PERFECT COMBINATION WITH Japanese Grilled WAYGU BEEF!!! Killler combo. The fatty grilled and salty beef intricately dances with the soft tannins and fruits. Each enhances the other. I'm going to save my last bottle to have on a special occasion at Bos Tarus with KOBE BEEF!!! This wine is NOT over the hill, but has aged gracefully. Try this combination with this wine you can...
