  • 1998 Elio Altare Barolo Brunate

Open and not decanted based on how open for business it was. In the beginning Brown sugary notes Which evolved into autumnal leaves and forest floor,
1 hour later evolved into an oily texture with notes of tar and licorice, which then involved into the more typical notes of tar and licorice.
Throughout this, the fruit was receding, and advanced past the point that you would recognize it as fruit. It had integrated into the earth notes I’ve been describing.

I opened this 2 hours before dinner with out decanting. So day one it was a bit closed and un expressive but it was pretty obvious that something special was lurking about.

Day 2 one of the most beautiful multi dimensional barolos I’ve ever had. Deep tar and liquorish earthy notes which grounded the wine and at the same time lovely amazing elegant fruit and minerals that lifted the wine to a place that was so special. Comparable to grand cru burgundy. The nose palette and length were perfectly in harmony. Within all of this complexity my wife also noted a hint of flowers like roses. I was struck by the impression of a wine that is both masculine and feminine at the same time.
But beware if we had not waited to enjoy 2/3rds of the bottle on day two we would surely have missed out
