  • WIML89

    Opened and served immediately.

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Simple nose and palate of red berries, red cherries and a bit of red raspberry. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium body. Drink now over the next year or so.

  • Maturing nicely. Less youth is reavaling some nice layers. Great mouthfeel and balance.

  • This has really deepened over the past year, with classic black cherry, earthy forest floor, cloves and a dusty finish.

  • Fruit forward, but very balanced. Dark cherries and spice. Nice all the way around.

  • Very good Qpr for this wine. It was nice, but simple. Short finish and nothing complex but nothing wrong with it just not memorable. For an entry level pinot from Oregon, good value. If it was a bit less expensive it would be a good every day drinker.

  • The winery perhaps overemphasizes the early-drinking nature of the Provocateur, for it's clear that compared to my notes and several other notes here that this was going through a sulky adolescence last year and it's only now coming into its drinking window, and barely at that. It's a promisingly pale wine now yet the fruit is still very primary, speaking of black cherry flesh and black cherry skins. There's some red earth and cherry wood smoke on the nose and just a touch of heat, although the heat is not evident on the palate. The balance is better now vs. last year, the quite dry finish is longer, and complexity is emerging in the form of earth, sandalwood, sweet grapefruit, and herb tones. Good, refreshing acidity, good structure, good medium-full texture. The tannins are fine yet slightly raw. I very much regret that this is my last bottle of the '06 Provocateur — this could become quite elegant — but I at least know now to keep my hands off the "standard" '06 WV bottling for at least two years, and preferably longer. This wine was not molested by new oak.

  • Very pleasant. Full with lots of fruit but wonderfully balanced and interesting.

  • Very pleased with this bottle. While it certainly isn't the WV bottling or single vineyard, this particular bottle showed some depth of fruit along with the strong acidity. Served at cellar temp this was a nice mid-week bottle. If scoring, I think I would go 89.

  • WIML89?

    Tasted November 10, 2009.

Opened and served immediately. Followed over 2 hours. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of berries and cherries carries through to the palate. Acidity seems bracingly high on this wine, medium tannins and body. Drink over the short term.

  • Since the last bottle was disappointing, I wanted to try another to see if it was the bottle or my palate. No change. The wine still tastes "stunted" to me.

  • Opened not decanted. Showing some clarity at the edge of the glass, Cherry and barnyard on the nose. On the palate: light in body, with a dry fruit attack of under ripe tart red berries with touches of caramel. The downside: the fruit starts to disappear leaving a dry and powdery alcohol finish absent of wine. Good.

  • This is solid, yet also a bit unbalanced and slightly simple and bitter (and not the good kind of Piedmont bitter) — and this did not change appreciably over three days. Black cherry fruit, medium to full-bodied, a fairly short finish. This does not have the elegance of J.K. Carriere's "standard" (and more expensive) Willamette Valley pinots, which can be very good.

  • Opened not decanted. Dark, sweet, dried fruit on the nose. On the palate: on opening, some gameyness that dissipates with time; the body has noticeable viscosity which also creates some wateriness; there are strong plum and black cherry notes ending with some sharpness. The sum total is a tad disjointed, but nothing off putting. Good.

  • WIML89? PURPLE90?

    Tasted December 22, 2008.

Opened and splash decanted about 15 minutes before serving. Followed over the next 3 1/2 hours. Dark garnet turning towards purple color in the glass, fairly clear hut throughout. Nose of plums and black raspberries right up front followed by some notes of black cherries and a little bit of briar patch. Picked up a little caramel around the 1 hour mark that quickly faded. Palate seemed fairly closed (could have been just tight but I doubt it) with mostly Bing cherries dominating with some added notes of red raspberries. Fairly high acidity, medium tannins, light to medium body. Short finish. The wine aromas and palate never waivered over the 3 1/2 hours. I'd normally say drink this entry level wine sometime over the short to medium term but I'm not sure if a little time might help to perk it up a little. I'll try another bottle in 2009 and report back.

  • Opened not decanted. Tasted at the winery. Quick notes: very high acidity with taut bright red fruit. Very hard to judge this right now for me. Seemed rather closed and that it needs a decent decant.
