PnP. Still showing very nicely. Beautiful garnet color in the glass, translucent at the rim. Fruit-forward but not a fruit-bomb by any means. Soft tannins, nice mouthfeel. I’m going to save my last bottle just a little longer even though I know it’s not getting better

Pleasantly surprised by this wine. Beautiful garnet color with notes of leather, dark cherry and tobacco with a touch of fig. The taste mirrors the nose exactly. Low acidity with a touch of tannins that deliver a very long finish. I think this is at peak or just past, so drink up.

Another impressive release from Groth Vineyards, although I'm thinking this wine has seen better days, despite drinking very well at this point. The color is bright, alive and very attractive. This wine is medium bodied, ready to consume with maybe a year or two left before it succumbs to age. It has a beautiful, deep ruby-red color and is nicely packed with spice and mild tannins. There is obvious licorice on the palate with a smokey, tar and wet leather finish. We decided against a decant, which really would not have improved the overall appearance of the wine. It was still nicely integrated with spice and cassis constantly jumping to the surface.

A lovely wine and exactly what I expect from a well-made Napa Cab. The nose blossoms with an earthy dark fruit bouquet of cassis, leather, tobacco, and cinnamon on a bed of wet forest floor. The palate is savory, integrated, delineated, and displays excellent structure, sultry textures, and bottle age complexity. It gains traction in the glass and tightens up on the resonant finish. No hurry, there's lots of room to grow.

Extra pull from Alex at Groth as we were enjoying the 2014 Estate and 2015 Reserve. Similar to my experience with my lone bottle I had a few months ago. I don't think this is improving at all, but it was performing a tick above the last bottle I had, if that means anything.

Overall note from a Groth tasting, presented by the winery at the Yacht Club in Lillydale. The pours were small, but sufficient to understand each wine. 2013 Groth Oakville Cabernet Sauvignonn – This comes across as big and a bit green. This seems quite young, is quite simple, and got me thinking that they better age well to justify the price. Impression - 88 2014 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – This is a step up from the regular cabernet. At least there is some interest. Full bodied with spice, dark fruit, earth and chocolate. I still don’t get the price tag though. Impression - 89. 2008 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – This wine was boring and tired. This wine does not taste like it is meant to age, as it should be singing right now. Impression - 87 2009 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – A slightly different flavor profile from the 2008, but also dull and tired. I should have asked the presenters if they decanted and how long. This was either over decanted or is not aging well. Impression - 87 2010 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – Ok, this tastes like an acceptable cabernet. Our discussion at the table was that it just tastes “cabby”, and I would expect more from Napa and this producer. Impression - 88

Nice wine. Not, particularly, fruit forward—some blackberry, some anise. Then, some leather, some slate, some dust (obviously, not “Rutherford Dust”). A sturdy wine, but with, pretty much, resolved tannins. A little “sour” on the aftertaste.

Dark, dense red. Significant tannins matched by dark berry fruit. A bit of richness, but this is secondary to the power and depth of fruit. A little brutish at this point. Needs time; still primary but has the pieces to come together.

Good but a bit mono with a ripe fruit envelope obscuring expected cabernet structure. Tannin a bit more pronounced on Day 2. Still pretty good. No idea how this will age. 89-90.

Opened and let it sit for two hours. Good fruit - cherry cola. Tannins are faded. Easy drinking but not complex. I got this in the $30 range back when it was released. Decent wine if you can get it for the right price.

This is a very good wine. And it has gotten better with age - no surprise. If you can find a 2009, get it and save it. You'll be glad you did. Nice balance, good tannins, great finish.

I had this in a restaurant by the glass several times a few years ago and liked it. It definitely has NOT aged well. Minty, medicinal, and herbaceous, way too alcoholic, obviously the oak char has gotten the best of the fruit, which is cloyingly sweet. I just opened the bottle so perhaps it needs a little time and I will revisit it in 24 hours. There IS a reason I drink Burgundy now for the most part-I just have to reminded every now and then.

Meh. An over-glorified, monotonous, terrible value Oakville cab with no depth, concentration, or character. It tasted closed so may be better in a few years, but still, I don't think there is much of anything under this rock.

Still a solid cab at $40ish. Big fruit, lush and juicy. Tannins ce on the finish to give it backbone. Might be overly ripe for some. I like it as a standalone drinker or with New York strip medium rare. I can see this going another few years and maybe..maybe improving.

Cinnamon almost a touch of red hots on the nose. Behind that is bing and black cherry. Some raspberry as well as charred oak. Very fruit forward. A bit light and disjointed, needs more tannins. Short finish, lacks complexity and depth.

A pleasant wine although not as smooth as other Groth Cabernets. Drank after a 2 hour decant. The wine is ruby colored, aroma is stoniness and mineral. It tastes like grapefruit, stoniness and mineral, with full body. The wine has coarse texture with medium acidity. Opened a 2nd bottle January 10, 2014, after a 2010 Groth Cab. This 2009 was drunk at cellar temperature with short decant. The grapefruit acidity was reduced and it drank well.

A great Oakvilke cab. Dry, red fruit, a hint of graphite and oak, with undertones of vanilla that add to the juiciness of the wine without overpowering it. At $40ish a bottle this is a great wine if you can still find this or the 09.

Last taste at Vino Volo. This was their cellar specialty. Funny - after some very nicely restrained wines from Italy, Spain, and Washington this came across as much more intense. The alcohol is apparently on the palette. It's a bit more syrupy and very fruit forward although that fruit is more of the sour berry flavor. Very tannic and I think this could really use a lot more time to calm down (I believe bottle was opened sometime today and it could use a good decant). Has some potential, but there are other Calis I like better.

Dark berries with some spice from the oak and finishes dry. This is a good cab but not great. It lacked much structure which i was expecting. Would try other vintages before this 09' again.
This had some nice dark fruit and a long earthy finish, but it was overpowered by the alcohol which put off a lot of heat. In addition, there was a musty spice component surrounding the oak that was a little jarring. Firm tannins will likely hold this together while it develops which could help work out the kinks, but for now this one was a disappointment after the terrific 08.

Pretty good wine. Not as good as the 07, but better than the 08. Typical fruit-forward cab from oakville, nice burst of fruit on the front palate, with a little oak and tannins showing up on the back end. Enjoyable, but nothing special... Good QPR at $36.
