On the nose, aromas of black current, tar and black olives. The palate is rich with fruit flavors of black current, blackberries and bing cherry. In addition to the fruit flavors there is tar, black olive, vanilla and some baking spices. This wine now has soft, med+ tannins and med+ acidity.

Found this bottle in a dark corner. It's holding up surprisingly well, with some smoky black cherries, but oak is just too dominant resulting in a very dry finish.

Still drinking quite well, although I meant to open a few years ago. Note of green pepper, cigar box herbs, and oaky undertones. Nicely balanced on the palate. Would have no issue pairing with a nice cut of red meat.

Still in full vigour, originally carried direct from the producer (what a stunning location!) to our cellar. Purple with garnet tones. Violet, morello & cassis on nose. Surprising floral notes, crème de cassis, subtle vanilla and shadows of cigar box. Balanced oak & tannins give firm structure to this nuanced South American cabernet blend.

Decanted for an hour, served for Tony, Marina and Tom with modestly spicy citrus-braised carnitas, pinto and kidney beans and rice. Deep garnet color, slightly herbal nose. Bright fruit, firm tannins but no especially distinguishing characteristics. A bit flat around the middle, though not as much as the '04 version we drank recently. This wine is incredibly consistent from year to year and is drinking as good as it ever will.

Coffee and herbal aromas, along with scents of auto exhaust? No need to decant. The fruit and tannins have mellowed out, but this wine was made for early drinking, and I think it's best days have past. Nice, pleasant, and straightforward.

Decent well balanced cab. Good fruit, smooth tannins which have integrated well. Score based on day one. Day two it fell apart. Fruit disappeared and the nose was overwhelming asphalt. Based on day two, I'd say drink it now.

Pop and pour, rather purplish in the glass. Not a great botle from the nose, although maybe it needs some time to come together. Powerful oak is too much here at the moment, and there's a nasty little skulking note of burnt rubber lurking at the edges. Wil come back to it in an hour or so.
EDIT : ok so a bit more than an hour. +24 hours recorked on counter. The oak has settled slightly but still strong. Just the faintest hint of a possible fixed sulphur fault as that rubber note is still lin there along with a bit of diesel oil. Finish is grippy but both this and the palate are a little flat. Not undrinkable but possibly a borderline flaw. No score.

Dark crimson color with a Bordeaux-like character in a modern setting. Good concentration of black berry fruits with hints of tobacco and vanilla. Finishes long with hints of pencil shavings and spice with finely integrated sweet tannin. Sexy, elegant, balanced - a complete wine. 89 Pts. Drink from 2009 to 2015.

Decanted for about 30 minutes; lots of oak. First taste was of overwhelming carmel/creme brule, in a good way. Soon followed by more earthy notes of tobacco and leather. Finish is respectable for a wine of this price; tannins are almost invisible. Nicely balanced wine and a great everyday drinker or token gift for a party host.

I like the note below that describes this as a wine you don't have to think about. Very good value (I don't recall but knowing I bought this in PA I'd bet I paid about $13), bankable vino with some intrigue. Dark fruit, some smokiness, good tannins, versatility. Montes is pretty much gold in my book.

Nice Chilean cabernet with a nose of black currant and subdued earth. Pleasant mouthfeel, medium bodied, with tastes of dark fruit and a little syrupy berry taste. The tannins begin to coat the mouth by the end of the first glass, this one definitely is better when consumed with food. The finish is medium long with good balance between tannins and acidity, with a little spice and the sweet berry tastes carries through the entire finish.

Opened and gave it a short decant. Garnett color. Nose of green vegetables, boysenberry, cassis, chocolate, and a little vanilla. The palate was big and concentrated with the boysenberry and chocolate notes carrying over. Gripping tannins and firm acidity. The vegetable smell dissipated with time in the glass, and the wine smoothed out nicely. The finish was medium-long. A longer decant would have served this wine well, but still a very nice effort. It should continue to improve for 1-2 more years.

A: Musky red some chalkiness. N: Earthy mint, lavender and some leather. T: Red fruits, cherry, elderberry and Christmas cake. F: Short and flat. Lingering cherry undertones. Lacks tannic structure. Overall: Perfect wine for a night alone. Save this for a time when you just want to open a bottle and not think about anything. V: 3/5

I decanted the wine for one hour before I poured it back into the bottle and consumed it over five evenings.
On day one, the nose was dominated by black currant, with candies. I got tons of black currants on the palate, with some oak flavours, and coffee on the back-end. The wine was dry, felt a little harsh, and the finish was a little flat. (86+) Quite the same on the second evening, cassis for days on the nose; plum and cassis on the palate. Initial attack and mid-palate were o.k., but the wine was harsh on the back-end and finish. (85)
On day three, I got dark fruits (predominantly plum and cassis) on the nose. The palate showed some oak, vanilla, some spiciness, and some fruit. As on the other evenings, the wine was harsh on the back-end and finish, The finish put me off as it now was really earthy and bitter and unpleasantly dry. (84) No surprise on day four, plum, black currant and oak. The wine got more and more unpleasant, on day five the initial attack still was o.k., the mid-palate was "mpf", the back-end and finish simply unpleasant. (84)
I have seen much better vintages of this wine in the past; this 05 really did not do it for me.

Popped and poured. Ruby-purple in glass. Forward nose features a fairly typical Chilean profile.....just more expressive than most, with black cherry, cassis & currant, Chilean "earth-funk," cinnamon stick, and an herbaceous note. Medium-plus body. On the palate it's easy to discern some fairly typical Cabernet Sauvignon notes of black fruits, ripe currant, fresh tobacco leaf, tar and cedar.......but there's also a nice underlying minerality that, coupled with plus acidity, gives this wine a very refreshing quality (maybe also indicative of the high quality vintage Chile experienced in 2005). Nice length on the fruit filled finish. Firm tannins give this wine perfect structure for mid-term aging. All-in-all, this is quite enjoyable....almost reminds me of the 2004 Don Melchor, if only a bit lighter.

Brilliant color - blood red, with purple highlights. Nose is interesting, if strange - smoky tar and sweet melted rubber, recently shined leather boots, oak. On the palate, the fruit emerges - currant, dark cherry, plum, pencil lead, some mapley-vanilla oak sweetness. A bit angular and medicinal right now, and the tannins are rough. I suspect this needs a few years to mature and integrate. But it has complexity and warmth, and it's never boring. I think this would be fun to bring to a Churrascuria - great with grilled meats and a low corkage fee.

Elegant and reliable! Color: transparent plumy color. Nose: earthiness and spices with hints of red berries. Palate: sharp with round tannins, toasty oak and zesty tones. Finish: short-mid with a well defined structure and pleasant taste. This wine was a great complement right after our foliage experience on our way to Millbrook, NY; what an un-matching and inviting experience!

Another nice wine from Chile's superlative 2005 vintage. This presents a lot of classic Chilean loamy character, with a core of fruit that evokes both raspberries and blackberries. Lots of vanilla oak character, maybe too much oak, actually. Also a sappy, maple syrup aspect. Quite complex for the money. Decent weight, and still some evident tannin. Evolved a lot in the glass and some sips bordered on medicinal, while others were quite pure. Overall, though, a nice cab for the money that may get better in the bottle over the next few years if the oak integrates a little better. 88-89.

Nose: Initially I got a strong whiff of new shoes/asian spice/cracked black pepper/sweet tobacco - VERY oaky Palate: Dirty cherry/currant/tobacco-spice-basil type component/ subtle hints of orange peel
Overall a very good and basic "user friendly" Cabernet. You would pay a lot more to get this sort of juice in Cali.

Popped and poured. Good garnet colour with a touch of purple arund the meniscus. Nose is oak-heavy but that cherry and leather pokes its head out after a few minutes in the glass and gets stronger. Medium-to-full bodied with lovely cassis and a faint whiff of something else (tobacco? chocolate? Is there a hint of Medoc in there trying to creep out??). Real impression of mint came through as it opened out. Love the finish on this - medium/long with a spanking of soft oak coming through. It's an 85+ pointer but if you take value into account this easily hits a 90. Got a few of these so although it's drinking very nicely now will be interesting to se how it holds up over the next 3-5 years or so. I suspect it's got the acidity and structure to keep it fresh for a while yet.

This wine had a dark ruby color. The nose was dark cherry and leather. The flavors were an interesting mix of red cherry, graphite and licorice. The finish was medium length and held the mineral edge all the way through. This wine tasted a little different that the previous vintages. It almost has a Carmenere overtone. I perfer the 2004 but this is also a solid effort.

** Love Purple Angel and just ordered "M" so I was interested in what their Cab would taste like for less 1/4 the price of PUrple Angel. The was very pleasant, and opened with some more dimension as the vening progressed. Fruit of plum and red berries upfront with a lingering hint of vanilla and spices in the background - mocha finish with very soft tannins.
Nice to drink for a weekday - Good QPR - certainly blows away anything California in this price range.
PS: Didn't really think this was the OAK MONSTER that GV professes - got more vanilla than oak.

I like this wine. Very cabernet, and very Chilean: while it doesn't have the clean delineation of my favorite wines from Chile (e.g., Domus Aurea) or the international style of others (e.g., Don Melchor and Clos Apalta), it's loaded with currant, cherry, and plum, and loamy earth and herbs. Very nice value.

Bright disc. Opaque purple/ruby with violet rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense aromas of black cherries, licorice and earth. Medium-bodied on the palate, with low acidity and medium sweet tannins. The flavors mirror the nose. While the middle thins a bit, a medium-length, fairly smooth finish is resurrected. Decent value. Drink now-12/12.

Pop and pour. Let it sit in the glass for 30 minutes to help open it up. Candied nose of sour cherry and a hint of oak. Nice silky mouth feel with what I felt was strong coca flavor which didn’t match the nose. Don’t think that’s ever happened to me before. Good weekday drinker IMO.

Nose of boysenberry, fig, smoky oak, and chocolate. Palate with stiff tannins, but balanced with berry-fruit and sweet oak. Medium to long finish with tobacco and earth. Significant drying tannins, but went wonderfully with a steak. A well done balanced chilean Cab. Will certainly get some more. Enjoyed more than the 2004. Unsure if will age well, the the fruit disappears too quickly, it may be overly tannic.

Deep ruby red. Sweet cassis framed cedar wood/pencil prominent nose. A lot of coffee bean on opening. On the palate more spiciness, chocolate and the medium finish becomes more raisined, berry like.

Love Purple Angel and just ordered "M" so I was interested in what their Cab would taste like for less 1/4 the price of PUrple Angel.

Unsure if will age well, the the fruit disappears too quickly, it may be overly tannic.
