Monday, April 18, 2016 - A good, fruit forward and well balanced Aussie Rhone blend of grenache, shiraz and mataro (mourvedre) - same blend as in Torbreck's The Steading but not aged as long. In a good drinking window now with at least a few more years of cellaring time left but not sure how much more this wine will improve. A good QPR wine. This was enjoyed at the inaugural tasting of our new wine club earlier this week and I definitely preferred this to the preceding '07 The Steading. Most of the group favored this as the wine of the flite. Opened up for about two hours in the wine glass w/out an otherwise formal decant and I definitely recommend decanting this wine. Still quite a big and unmistakeably Aussie wine attempted to be made in a French Rhone style - relatively mellow and soft given the blend but not a French Rhone style wine. Plenty of fruit, soft tannins, well balanced, good mouth feel, not jammy but fruit too big and warm weather to be French in style. Very dark wine with a reasonable aftertaste. Balanced nose of dark fruit, spice, oak and black pepper. Palate of oak, black fruit, spice, black pepper, meat and smoke with a hint of eucalyptus on the late palate. Recommend this wine - as noted above this wine does definitely have time left but not sure there is an upside to furthering cellaring.
