90 Points

Thursday, February 7, 2013 - Upon opening, this had a rather seductive nose of berries, flowers and some earth. On the palate, however, this is incredibly stemmy, so much so that it overtakes all other flavors. However, by day 2, this is in a much better place, which gives me faith that the wise folks at Rhys know what they are doing, but that patience will be required for these wines to show at their best. On day 2, there are still some stemmy notes, bordering on dirty, but also with lovely aromas of raspberry, lavender, and herbs de provence. The midpalate could use some filling out, and this is less structured than the SV bottlings, with less prominent acid, but it is an enjoyable wine nonetheless. Not screaming value at $45, however, and I do think the whole cluster component to these wines could be dialed back a bit without sacrificing structure and ageability.
