2001 Failla Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard

Sonoma Coast more

Clear burgundy red - slightly bricked but with no oxidation. Light bodied in the glass. Herbal (not herbaceous) nose with black & brown spice. Gives it's alc. up on the nose. Light to medium body in the mouth, viscosity coming from the alc. with no glycol feel. Shows it's acid, and alc. but balanced with red fruit and black spice flavors. Starts bright and refreshing, finishes with spicy, dark fruit and eucalyptus. This is classical cold climate Pinot holding it's own with age. Like other cold coastal west county pinots the Failla Hirsch is old worldly in nature and has the aging potential to match. Previous reviewers drank this wine way too young IMHO. Super food wine - drank with aged NY Strip and red pepper sauce, grilled bok choy, and salad topped with strawberry, chevre and vinaigrette. The light bodied wine held it's own and contributed to the flavors of my meal. #the way it should be.

Slightest bit of browning - alcohol on the nose holding down some cedar & spice - black cherry- little bit of black pepper, but some green olive too. Viscouse and heavy - in conflict with the origins.

In no way too old - lots of fruit still there. Decanted for 3 hours. Very light bodied. Translucent ruby color. Dusty but fresh nose.

Cork had some seepage - Nervous
Ruby with slight bricking, but still clear and colorful
Some spritz, but not the heavy oxidation I expected. Spritz settles quickly and a nice, if over the top older Zin. I think the fruit is tempered a bit, the complexity and acids balance the heat. Acids, some bright red raspberry, hints of VA, but not off (even with teh secondary induced spritz). More tannic than when younger. finish is old wine. I dont miss the fruit on this old wine, but maybe a tiny bit too old.
Was great with nicely seasoned, grilled, dry aged NY Strips
I should update this. After evacuating the bottle to preserve the remaining wine I left it for the night. Next dinner ,I tasted it and was surprise at the VA. In to the vinegar barrel.

Tasted aslong side 2005 Boheme Que Syrah Vineyard Syrah. Interesting comparo
Deep Deep Ruby color. Clear, pretty wine
Funky smell blows off after an hour or so. Cherry, dried cherry, dried fruit. Not quite pruny
Really velvety mouth feel. Heavy bodied
bright tart Dark Cherry, Aromatics(sage & juniper), Green Olive & licorice finish, sweet tannins
Like a CherryBomb Martini with a big stinkin olive in it. Not an entirely unpleasant combination. Good with Roasted pork.
If this wine was a dude - he'd be wearing a satin smoking jacket with an ascot, would have a gin buzz on, need a shower and shave, but would have cologne on to try to hide it.

Brite ruby to to ruby/brick color, clear, light body in glass, less viscous than water, mild sediment visible

Hot when first opened, gaseous, edgy, Leather, Cherry, dried cranberry, asian spice. Heat subsides, leaving the fruit to brighten, the leather to soften and the spice to sweeten. Rounder after it breathed a bit.

Initially spritzed somewhat but settled well in the glass, Cherry, Rasberry, Rhubarb & Cola, Tea, cedar Bark & redwood. Fruit, Acid, Tannins all present at start, middle and finish. Some viscosity and sweetness - "glyceral" was apt. Finished a touch like "flor de sel" caramel with a nice old wine roundness. Romantic notions of being on the coast at Fort Ross with the smell of salt, seaweed, and wet rocks. Not fishy, but coastal. Smooth really. Not terribly complicated, though fully structured.

For sure the wine is past its peak and on decline, though I'd bet still a few years as a Very Good wine. Probably was never very complicated and complex.

I basically solo'd this bottle as my wife is on meds and only had about a 2oz pour. I was in great shape at bedtime and in the AM, no indication of an off secondary fermentation. The secondary schpritz was likely fresh from bottling and integrated some eight years in.

Bottle was well cellared and in great shape. Cork had mild staining to caspule, but no visible seep at time of opening

Old worldish. Burgundian. Fruit is gone, hints of what was there show cherry to frambois with tart mallic structure. Pleasant, if too late, for the bottle
