Blackfruit flavours are delivered with intensity and lots of complexity comes from the cedar, earth and mineral notes. While some Napa Cabs lean toward the sweet side of the spectrum, this wine definitely sits on the savoury side. The finish is long and spice-infused. The mouthfeel is terrific: medium+ body, good acidity and lots of ripe, polished tannins. There is definitely a Bordeaux-like sense to this wine with its savoury and elegant qualities. After 15 years it has softened and integrated but enough structure remains to suggest it is only half way through life. Lots of cassis and some blueberry and some menthol/eucalyptus on the nose. Near perfect balance creates a gorgeous mouthfeel that is velvety but defined thanks to the tannin/acidity. Long, cool finish (due to the menthol note). Quite complex with cedar and leather notes. The black fruit carries on to the palate, but what you notice most is not the flavours but the body. This is a massive wine, still youthfully tannic, and very full bodied. The first few sips were almost over-powering but with air and some food things settled down and it became a delicious but very powerful wine. We also picked up hints of eucalyptus or a slight medicinal quality. The palate was very old world in character: medium+ body, tannic, hard at first, quite Hermitage-like. It softened as the evening progressed. Flavours of blackberry, black cherry, espresso and bitter dark chocolate. There was a nice spicy note which showed cracked pepper on the finish.
