2014 Rhys Pinot Noir Home VineyardSanta Cruz Mountains more |
5/12/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Quite pale red color with just a hint of bricking on the rim. Cool earth, sandalwood and black pepper on a very savory nose. Also quite savory on the palate with salted cranberry, some meaty raspberry - the fruit there, but somewhat hidden behind the savory notes. Still good intensity and acidity suggests it will go for some time, just not sure it has the oomph of some of the other Rhys vineyards from 2014. |

2013 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm VineyardSan Mateo County more |
5/4/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp, cork fully saturated and a bit crumbly, but wine seems sound. Translucent rusty red. Cola, sandalwood and white pepper on a somewhat restrained nose. Nice sweet red fruit on the attack with good texture, just lacking a bit in acidity and oomph compared to some of the other vineyards. In a good place, not likely to fall off a cliff, but not sure much improvement with more age. |

4/13/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Still quite dark hued and opaque with no signs of bricking. Pine sap, pomegranate and herbes de Provence on the nose. Earthy black cherry fruit on the attack with quite pronounced acidity on the finish. Still a bit burly and drinking like a youngster, but quite good. We will see if this unfurls a bit as it opens. |

3/29/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Cloudy pinkish light red color. Beautiful sweet strawberry fruit and this intriguing aroma of a clean Northern breeze. Just reminds me of those lovely summer cold fronts that clear out the humidity and refresh everything. Lovely sweet strawberry fruit with good mouth puckering acidity and savory salt and herbs on the finish. Words aren’t doing justice to how intriguing and delicious this wine is. |

3/24/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Very lovely dark purple color with just a hint of lightening at the rim. Violets, truffles and a bit of cigar on an intoxicating nose. Palate does not quite match the intensity of the nose - nice elegant structure, some black fruit and acid, but seems a bit closed down or quite restrained. Going to throw it in the decanter to see if it opens up by dinner time. |

3/23/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRMy last bottle and I thought it would be a nice diversion on a cold rainy night. Popped and poured at cellar temp. Still incredibly dark burgundy color with no signs of bricking. Meaty, savory nose with a nose savage underbrush and dark black cherry. Lovely sappy red fruit, acidity and elegant texture on the palate. Great blend of refinement and power. Still going strong but not sure it will improve from here? Bravo Joe. |

2020 Porter Creek Viognier Hayley Marie CuveeRussian River Valley more |
3/19/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRYou don’t see a lot of estate grown viogner in Sonoma, but Porter Creek may be on to something. Popped and poured at slightly cooler than cellar temp. Very pale yellow color in the glass. Nice blend of honeysuckle, lemon oil and granite on the nose. Good viscous texture with plenty of sweet white peach and honey notes, but plenty of balancing acidity and structure to make for a very nice package. |

3/9/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NR4.5 years since I opened my last one. Popped and poured at cellar temp. Still quite dark color, no bricking. Beautiful rose petals, dark earth and rich black cherry fruit on a fragrant nose. |

3/1/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Dark blackish purple couple in the glass. Black cherry, olive and lavender on a very elegant nose. Quite a bit bigger and more structured on the palate than the nose with meaty black cherry fruit and solid tannins and a hit of alcohol on the finish. Going to throw it in the decanter to see if it chills a bit. I think some more time in the bottle will do it good, and has the stuffing to age well. |

2016 Aeris Wines Etna Etna Rosso CentenariEtna DOC Nerello Mascalese more |
2/19/2024 - jreis wrote: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. White pepper, ash and cranberry fruit on the nose. Nice texture on the palate with some sweet black cherry fruit and peppery spice on the attack. Unfortunately the acidity is a bit out of balance on the finish and overwhelms the fruit. This demands food to balance it out. In my experience, Aeris has been more successful with their domestic wines than those from Sicily. |

2/6/2024 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Cloudy dark red color, not much sign of age visually. Dark cherry, black pepper and pine needles with just a hint of cola on a dark brooding nose. Still big and burly on the palate as well - black cherry, mint and crisp acidity on the attack with some prominent tannins on the finish. I think there was a fair amount of stem inclusion at this point in the winemaking. This feels very young - drinking well, but I think some patience will be rewarded with another gear here. Another reinforcement that Horseshoe is my favorite Rhys Pinot site. |

12/18/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRSo my experience with aged Rhys have not been as good as I had hoped, having been buying since the 06 vintage. I feel like some bottles were a bit old, some too young and some just fell flat. |

11/25/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Definitely starting to show its age. Some bricking on the rim. Nice tar, roses and asphalt on the nose with just a hint of pruny fruit. Interesting mix of fragrant Nebbiolo fruit, fine tannins that are pretty fully resolved, and good refreshing acidity. Unfortunately there is the beginning of a stewed fruit note on the finish that is not terrible, but is what is leading me to believe it is time to drink up. |

11/20/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRFrom 375 - popped and poured at cellar temp. Deep brooding black color. Lovely peppery meaty nose with a granite mineral note behind it. Still quite young and tannic on the palate, with some lovely peppery black fruit and bright acidity. Still very young, even in this format. Going to be terrific with some more age. |

2017 Sandler Wine Company Grenache Boer VineyardChalone more |
11/19/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRA Pinot noir lover’s Grenache. Popped and poured at cellar temp. Very clear translucent color - surprisingly light for Grenache. Black pepper, roses and some feral underbrush on a somewhat restrained nose. Interesting palate with some sweet cranberry fruit, bright acidity and a funky spicy peppery note. I don’t think I would ever peg it as Grenache blind, but a tasty, elegant and unusual take on it. I am not sure this will make old bones, but as all Sandler wines a fantastic value. |

11/4/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Deep purple color. Nice nose of menthol, chocolate and dark black raspberry fruit. Good balance of sweet blackberry fruit, fine tannins and nice spicy acidity on the finish. Went very well with grilled steak tips. Still on the youngish side, should improve for the next 3-5 years. |

10/30/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp.Had my last one of these 3 years ago and I would say this bottle was significantly more advanced. Cloudy red color with some bricking at the rim. Lots of sweet black cherry fruit and a hint of menthol on the nose. Somewhat subdued palate with sweet black cherry fruit. Unfortunately this bottle seems muddled at this point and atypical of most of my experience with Horseshoe. Bought on release, so don’t think it was damaged along the way, but not up to my expectations. |

10/24/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Blackberry fruit, eucalyptus and a hint of white pepper on a somewhat restrained nose. Lovely palate with sweet blackberry fruit, balanced with a nice graphite/mineral note and nice acidity on the finish. Tannins fully resolved. Time to drink up as I don’t think this will make old bones, but very nice today. |

10/20/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Lovely nose of roses, tar and black pepper. Classic Nebbiolo. Nice cherry fruit, tarry tannins on the palate with nice balancing acidity. Just a little short on the finish but a great everyday wine and a great value. |

10/10/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at slightly cooler than cellar temp. Lovely pale gold shimmering color. Somewhat restrained nose of beeswax, lemon oil and grass. Lovely body and texture on the palate, with unctuous white pear fruit but a nice balancing lemony acidity. My first experience with this wine, but my sense is it will have another gear with some more bottle age. Very nice and excellent with a simple baked haddock for dinner. |

8/26/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Still very dark purple color with just a hint of lightening at the rim. Intoxicating nose of blackberry, violets, eucalyptus, dusty earth and just a hint of coffee. Very vibrant on the palate, with similar blackberry and dusty earth with very pronounced balancing acidity and still some pronounced fine tannins on the finish. This is still quite young and I am going to throw it in a decanter. Early days of the drinking window but I think this will be fabulous with the steak tips I will be grilling tonight. |

8/21/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRPopped and poured at cellar temp. Nice dark reddish purple core with just a bit of bricking on the rim. Dark cherry, white pepper, leather and a bit of oak on a pleasant nose. Nice balance of earthy black cherry fruit a bit of spicy oak and balancing acidity. Not a blockbuster, but a really nice bottle, great value and will be versatile with a wide range of foods. Ready to drink now, but has plenty of years left. |

6/26/2023 - jreis Likes this wine: NRAn unusual wine. Served at cooler than cellar temp. A bright light cherry red color, like a cross between a rose and Pinot noir. Quite savory nose with lots of sea spray, oregano and thyme. Thick texture, savory notes, sweet cherry and a pronounced herbal note on the finish. Unlike anything I have tasted before. Even better with a little fat from cheese to play off the savory notes. |
