Post modern Nebbiolo trying to be more like Pinot. For my palate, failing in both. Tasted disjointed with a weird bitterness in the finish.

New winery. And a beautiful smell Barolo nose. Apparently some Ratti connection here. Stiff on day two in a quite good way.

This is in a great place but still evolving. Saturated dark fruit. Beautiful tannins starting to resolve. Length to burn.

Drank this after the 2014 straight cab sav. Lots of similarities but at the moment I preferred the first wine which is just drinking wonderfully. I think, however, this wine will end up in a better place but unlike screwcaps below I reckon it is best held for a few more years, at least. If I did not have the comparison I would have said it is great now and go for it. This wine has a bit more tannin, oak and structure and I still find it a touch tight and lacking any secondary development. Easily 94. lovely.

Ink black with tinges of red. Earthy vanilla parfume. Soft juicy pillowy cabernet fruit followed by drying and lingering tannins. In it's prime. I pity our CT comrade who suffered bad bottles some years ago. Definitely for red meat dishes.

Sweet and savoury but big tannins needs some time. Rich fruit, perhaps a touch more merlot than necessary. Black olive nose with hint of licorice. Acid a bit harsh. Good wine, perhaps it will settle.

Oak dominated and I suspect it will forever. It's sappy and heavy handed but there is some big Shiraz fruit in there too. Smooth tannin line redeems the dominating vanilla oak, acid good but some cork artifacts are showing. The large cork itself was over half way stained via imperfections. It's WA shiraz in a traditional SA mould, for me. Lots of tartrate residue in the bottle.

Good vintage and seemingly nice fruit ruined by the use of oak that has made the wine overly sappy, changed the tannin and creates a bitterness that takes over the sweetness of the lovely ripe fruit. It actually really shits on all of the bright fruit flavours. Shame. Might be a better wine in a few years but never as good as it could have been.

7/27/2019 7:04:00 AM - Day 2 on this wine and it is enjoyable, more like barolo really. It's all cherry and almonds but I still wonder what could have been. The oak is lingering and the lighter floral parts of the wine are muddied. Many will love this as a bargain barolo but I will stand with my initial review, great fruit and I am sure it will develop into a very good wine but at the expense of a younger drinking, complex Nebbiolo. Expectations and personal preferences really.

One word to describe a wine? This would be 'precise'. It is exact. There are no jagged edges here, no chips or cracks. It is crystalline shiraz and it works so well. It has a steel backbone that forgoes any warmth and cuddliness for purety and drive and wins against them all.

  • Comment posted by GD77:

6/25/2019 6:13:00 PM - The 2006 wines have been drinking very well over the past couple of years. This one is still very tightly woven and in my opinion it will get better and more expressive so keep it if you can. It is fine to drink now but give it a long decant (all day) to open up.

2014 Mount Pleasant Wines Shiraz Philip

1/14/2019 - GD77 Likes this wine: 92 points

This wine is going through a typical hunter transition. Its good at present but has lost a bit of youthful acidic brightness and settling in as a solid but perhaps not great hunter shiraz. It is certainly better than the typical Philip. Tannin support and acid give hope of a bit more life ahead where it should shine again. Give it another year or two if you only have a couple.

  • Comment posted by GD77:

2/4/2019 3:02:00 PM - Yes, I bought 18 of these and have gone through 6. I find a lot of Hunter Shiraz drop into a phase that they are drinkable but really similar and unremarkable. The ones that start out lighter and prettier tend to fare better in the long term in my experience. My guess is this one will be solid, if not robust drinking down the track but lack that floral complexity that the best take with them.

Jammy cabernet maybe a little too much residual sugar. Chewy mouth feel, mellow tannins. Not built for the long haul. Screw top. Restaurant Cab $18/glass no one will complain. Drinks day 2 as same as day 1.

  • Comment posted by GD77:

2/4/2019 2:55:00 PM - Interesting comment. Perhaps they got a bit cooked on the way to the US. The label is, generally, built for the long haul and 2012 is a good example of this wine. I find 10-15 years the sweet spot but still have 1998s drinking well and 2008 still a bit young (although that one is not the norm). Some people consider this one of the most prominent and important wines in Australia. It is certainly the most collected.

  • Comment posted by GD77:

3/5/2018 5:48:00 PM - Ha. :) Yes. I drank a couple a while back and I reckon they use the same type of oak as Tulloch which I don't like all that much in white wine. I think Scarborough also tastes similar but normally they have better Chardonnay. Its probably not that out of balance but I can taste it, and perhaps now a bit sick of it as the better half drinks tons of Tulloch.

Half bottle under screwcap. A bit of air helps this along very nicely. Probably at a peak right now in the smaller bottles but has some time to move. A very good blackwell, weighted perfectly. Alcohol blows off with a rest and gives a pretty powerful drink without being cloying or too rich. Blue and black fruits, vanilla from the oak. Mouth-filling and enjoyable. Acid has settled back a bit from what I remember.

  • Comment posted by GD77:

11/21/2017 2:21:00 PM - Full bottle will be fine for another 5 years. The halves should probably be drunk withing that period. Unless you like your shiraz quite aged, which I certainly don't.

A $15AUD Clare Valley shiraz that will go 10 years. A brownish tinge. The nose is like sticking your face in a cigar box. Has dark fruits as well, perhaps some blueberry. Palate has balanced out well, still a slight greenish tinge, which has been detected in previous notes. Tannins prominent, yet smooth. Not tired at all, good to go with some time ahead of it.

Concentrated and rich dark berries with some blueberry on the nose. Only just starting to evolve but it is together and balance is spot on. Savoury mouth filling wine for the long haul. Give 5 years. 95.

  • Comment posted by GD77:

3/5/2017 6:11:00 PM - Julian, as a general comment you may be right but I think this wine in particular is evolving very well. I would say for me that it is really quite full bodied, but more refined and less flabby than some others from that part of Australia. It has all the ingredients for it to evolve for some time to come (including screwcap), so I don't see a problem in terms of improving for at least another 5 years. 2006 Simpatico is drinking fantastically at the moment BTW.
