2011 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Cuvée Haute Densité

Chardonnay more

Young, fresh, complex and engaging. It had no artifice and was pure fruit and rocks. There was plenty of lemon and loads of chalk and limestone. It has richness without weight and is everything you could want for in white wine.

Plenty of struck match and toast to the aroma at first. The reductive notes make way for a wine that is fresh and fruity with some mildly exotic notes. It has good volume and a spine of lemon juice. As it breathes up you get the delightful scent of orange blossom coming to the fore. Perfectly mature white Burg without a hint of oxidation.

I'm not convinced that a premox'd wine will ever recover. I do know that screwcap will fix the problem once and for all. This particular bottle was a recent acquisition from a private cellar in France. I have one more bottle and will drink it soon and report back.

Richebourg Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

From magnum this was the most accessible out of the top four 2002 DRC's. It has deliciously sweet red and black fruits. There was a touch of spice and some freshly grated ginger. It had a really sweet core and the finish was precise with some sinewy muscle. A very pretty and elegant Richebourg.

The 1999 Salon Champagne was a little mealy on the nose. It was creamy, full and rich with good line.

One of the most delightful and ethereal bottles of Bordeaux I have had. The nose is elegant, complex and engaging. You get notes of tobacco, sweet earth, fresh flowers and briary fruits. It is silky in the mouth with layers of sweet fruit that envelop the palate. It builds and has all sorts of savoury nuance. Tannins are ripe, sweet and supportive and it has remarkable persistence. It is a wine that feels absolutely complete, drinking very much at its apogee.

Warm and generous with plenty of spice and ripe berry fruit. It has an engaging floral spice weaving through the aroma and flavor profiles. The texture is creamy and plush and there's some grip from the tannins on the finish. An excellent Lambrays.

2022 sounds good. It will be shining in a decade or so I suspect.

Humble village wine that held its head up high whilst playing with the big boys. I thought the oak was a little prominent as there were plenty of coffee and toast things going on but there was real fruit weight as well. There was a sweet heart of Satsuma plum and spicy aniseed notes as well. It had good length of flavour.

Spicy, oaky and modern. The fruit is intense and dense, bursting with blue fruit goodness. There's some liqueur cherry and the wine has sweet, abundant tannins on the finish.

Pours out an iridescent green colour. So fresh, so vibrant, so good. Shows but a hint of toasty development then she's all fresh white peach, citrus and mineral. It has a rigid spine and with air you get a suggestion of preserved lemon and some retrained exoticism. It is dense, linear and compact and length is superb. Quite brilliant.

Pure, perfumed, powerful Barolo that is not forced and without any makeup (although it does smell of lipstick). It has the most ethereal and cerebral nose offering up all sorts of flora, fruit, liquorice, spice and earthy notes. The pastel fruits really sweeten up in the glass but always maintain crisp, sharp focus with a savoury truffle/tar/earthy edge. Tannins gently dab away all of the saliva from one’s mouth without any malice or hard astringency and the wine’s balance, proportion and length are phenomenal. It leaves the most sensual of mouth aromas once swallowed and it hands down the best Barolo I have had this year.

Smells of leather, tar, sweet meats, black olive tapenade and beef stock. It is full and vinous in the mouth with some mint and wild sage nuance (fucked if I really know the difference in smells of the wild and cultured versions of sage). It gets a little chocolatey in the glass and is a very tasty wine with good character.

Cool and slightly wild on the nose with notes of sour cherry, sap, violets and other floral things. The fruit has a jubey quality to it but in a decidedly adult Irish Moss throat lozenge kind of a way. The last few vintages of this wine have been creamier and rounder but this is a little rawer and edgy (I quite like it by the way). It finishes with good cut and is quite chewy.

  • Comment posted by Jeremy Holmes:

10/4/2013 9:53:00 PM - I am quite offended but jubey refers to fruit jube lollies. Confected fruit may be another way to describe what I'm trying to get across.
