Tasting Notes
« Solas » is the Irish for ‘light’ and in Old French means ‘joy’, ‘pleasure’, and ‘enjoyment’. Our Solas wines reflect the purity, balance, and light-handed approach that characterizes Laurent’s approach to winemaking.
Solas Pinot Noir is a well-balanced, food-friendly wine with a medium body and light, bright berry flavours – red cherry, raspberry, and blackberry. Smooth on the palate with aromas of garrigue strawberries and rosemary and hints of Indian spiced tea on the finish.
Night-time harvesting, pre-fermentation cold soaking between 5-7 days to extract maximum fruit aroma. Fermentation up to 25-26 degrees alternating plunging and pumping over. Aging in stainless steel tanks with 20% aged in 1 -2 year old barrels.
Delicious with traditional charcuterie or Bouillabaisse. Ready to drink. Serve between 14°C and 16°C.

Revision 1: edited by LindsayM on 5/23/2024 (view)
The Creation concept is to highlight a different example of our vineyards diversity each year. The brief: Pick something unique that tells both a story of individual terroir and the vintage that was… with a little winemaking flair thrown in for good measure.
Due to the low-yielding vintage of 2020 and being limited to the boundaries of our Seppeltsfield Estate, allocations are restricted to one set per Clos Otto Club Member. $RRP 195

Wine

: 2015 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut
(France, Champagne)

Revision 1: edited by LindsayM on 5/23/2024 (view)
CONCENTRATION - THE HALLMARK OF A SPECTACULAR VINTAGE

Perfectly in keeping with the continental trend of the decade, the 2015 vintage thus created wines that were ripe, well-structured and crowned by a bold freshness guided by its white soils. Brought our by Roederer's gentle and virtuous winegrowing practices, the purity of the chalk shines through and we are offered a perfect symbiosis of maturity and freshness.

For the first time since 2002, this vintage is sourced from all 45 plots where the vines are over 20 years old and thus eligible for inclusion in the Cristal blend. With its concentrated character, this continental year has given us this exceptional and rare opportunity and today it is simply magical to see the whole Estate reflect the identity of this unique wine: pure fruit, superb finesse and elegant length.

The permanence of Cristal is thanks to its loyalty to the soil. It is a wine that is rooted in the eternal, that of the seasons, a ripening cycle, a heritage and a quest.

The 70 plots that make up Domaine Cristal are cultivated using organic and biodynamic practices ensuring its permanence yet constant evolution. Anything that does not evolve perishes...
In the vineyards destined for our Cristal champagne, consistency lies precisely in the changes made each year. Depending on the year's weather and growing cycle, only the highest quality plots are selected to go into the final blend in order to capture the soul of Cristal, its beating heart and most authentic self.

These 70 outstanding lieux-dits have been carefully and patiently built up by the successive generations at the helm of the Louis Roederer Champagne House since 1845. They are worked using a bespoke and traditional winegrowing approach that respects the living environment, using eco-friendly practices that include massal selection, gentle pruning, the use of biodynamic composts and allowing the land to lie fallow for long periods. These methods are inspired by the principles of permaculture in which the ecosystem adjusts its balance thereby forming a close bond between Man and Nature. 30 hectares are also worked by horse, in particular the oldest and youngest vines which are the most fragile.
These vineyards are located in 7 Grands Crus: 40% are planted with Chardonnay on the Avize hillsides (10 plots), in Cramant (11 plots) and in Mesnil-sur-Oger (9 plots) and 60% are planted with Pinot Noir on the Ay hillsides (10 plots), in Verzenay (17 plots), Verzy (12 plots) and Beaumont-sur-Vese (1 plot). This breakdown also forms the exact composition of the wine's blend.
The Vintage
2015 was a hot and sunny year marked by episodes of heat and drought, relieved by some very welcome rain at the end of the summer which enabled the grapes to preserve all their freshness. These weather conditions gave rise to juicy, ripe and concentrated grapes with a perfect balance. Cristal 2015 has taken full advantage of these contrasting weather conditions, showing a strong chalky temperament and capturing the vibrations of its soils as never before; a delightful paradox!
Perfectly in keeping with the continental trend of the decade, the 2015 vintage thus created wines that were ripe, well-structured and crowned by a bold freshness guided by its white soils. Brought out by Roederer's gentle and virtuous winegrowing practices, the purity of the chalk shines through and we are offered a perfect symbiosis of maturity and freshness.

A perfect combination of softness and concentration, matched by a masterful maturity, Cristal 2015 delivers intense and delicious aromas with a superb energy and a magical vibration. This is a timeless champagne with a chalky temperament, sustained by its soils, freed from the sunny character of the vintage.

The nose begins with hints of yellow fruit, toasted almonds and wheat from the Chardonnay, combined with the juicy red fruit of the Pinot Noir. Then comes the great surge of energy from the wine's structure, a vibratory intensity that transforms into a gentle caress, a silky texture interwoven with fine flavours of candied citrus and iodised spices.

The vintage's chalky character thus bursts forth in a bracing, vertical effervescence, with an insistent, precise and finely honed freshness. The finish is underpinned by subtle oaky, sappy and saline notes, which creates the ultimate sensation of delicacy and concentration.

Cristal 2015 remains a wine of supreme balance and measure, resonating from the chalky nature of its soils rather than the sunny character of its vintage. A perfect Cristal, intensely of the 2015 vintage, with enormous ageing potential...

: 2021 Hentley Farm The Creation
(Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley)

Revision 1: edited by LindsayM on 5/23/2024 (view)
Each vintage there are different reasons why wines for The Creation “shine” during component classification.
THE PROJECT
Each year, our Chief Winemaker Andrew Quin creates a limited release single block wine that showcases the unique terroir diversity across the Hentley Farm estate, and the characteristics of the vintage that was.
Originally under the familiar Hentley Farm white label, The Creation now has an original label created each vintage by artists from the Adelaide Central School of Art, to portray the individuality, style, and distinction of this iconic wine

The Wine
2021 GRENACHE
When benchmarking for the 2021 vintage began, a remarkable Grenache parcel from the C3 Block was quick to stand out. A mild growing season provided superb conditions for gradual flavour development, of which our winemakers were excited to declare ‘Grenache’ as the 2021 Creation Project.
The potential of this outstanding wine has been recognised and celebrated outside of the winery ahead of this single-block release. As a component of the 2021 Old Legend Grenache, this parcel shares in the accolades of the 2022 awarded Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy, along with ‘Best Grenache’ of the Royal Queensland Wine Show (2022), and ‘Best Grenache’ of the Sydney Royal Wine Show (2022).

BY MARK HEIDENREICH
Terra-Villa Handcrafted Ceramics
A principal storage vessel used in ancient Greek pottery, the two-handled pot with a neck narrower than the body was used for storage and as transport vessels for olives, grain, milk, oil, and wine. Decorative, painted amphora vases were used as decanters and were given as prizes.
Mark Heidenreich is a potter, sculptor and artist working in clay from his Terra-Villa studio in Adelaide. Mark has become most widely acclaimed for his ability to craft artistic works that are both impressive in their scale and beautiful in their form. He is known as the winemaker’s potter for his work producing traditional amphora vessels.
KOTTABOS RECLINE'
BY MARY-JEAN RICHARDSON
Kottabos was a game of skill played at Ancient Greek and Etruscan symposia (banquet-style celebrations). The game involved flinging wine sediment at a target placed in the middle of the room, with the target often placed atop a pole.
Depicted on the label is ‘Kottabos Recline’, where technique and dexterity were essential to maintain elegant form. The reclined players, propped up on one elbow, would place two fingers through the loop of one handle and cast wine dregs in a high-arc towards the target. Due to the way players threaded their fingers through the handle, the movement has been alikened to that of throwing a javelin spear.
A customary tradition in the 6th and 5th centuries (BC), ancient writers and artists made frequent allusions to the practice; depicted on contemporaneous red-figure vases (amphora).
'EYES OF DIONYSUS'
BY MARY-JEAN RICHARDSON
Dionysus was the Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure, festivity, and fertility. He created wine and spread the art of viticulture.
He had a dual nature; capable of evoking pure joy and divine ecstasy; or he would ignite brutal and blinding rage, thus reflecting the dual nature of wine.

: 2022 Marco Bonfante Cuvée Massi
(Italy, Piedmont, Piemonte DOC)

Revision 1: edited by AJSGerritsen on 5/22/2024 (view)
Cuvée MASSI is the wine dedicated to Massimo, the new arrival in the Bonfante family in 2021

GRAPE VARIETY:
40% Nebbiolo
60% Brachetto

VINEYARD:
The soil is made of thick and solid sandstones, named Serravalle sandstones. The ground has a very light colour. The altitude (300 mt. asl), woods and sea breezes contribute to create a microclimate with strong temperature ranges, which favour the development and the fineness of the aromas.
Training system: Guyot
Vineyard density: 5000 plants per hectare
Harvest: Second half of September
Yield per hectare: 65 hl/Ha

WINEMAKING:
Grapes are destalked and soft-pressed at controlled temperature (18°) in steel tanks with selected yeasts.

TASTING:
In the glass the Cuvée Massi is clear, with a pale pink colour. It has a delicate, pleasantly fresh bouquet, with hints of rose and strawberry. On the palate it is fine, dry, sapid with an excellent balance between acidity and a notable minerality. It has an important structure for a rosé, with good persistence.

Service temperature: 8°-10° (46°F-50°F)
Food pairing: Summer wine, perfect as aperitif. It pairs perfectly with fresh starters. Highly recommended with fish specialities, like linguine with clums, cuttlefish and calamari.

Specs
Varietal: A harmonious blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay
Alcohol: 13.9%
pH: 3.67
Total Acidity: 0.700g/100ml

Tasting Notes
Very fragrant! Passion fruit with floral notes of roses and honey spice. Flavors of tropical fruit, rich honey, and a hint of grassiness follow. The refreshing finish is framed by mild acidity. The wine is light and crisp. This is a white wine to enjoy on its own or with dishes that have some spicy heat like curried chicken or Thai shrimp salad. Pairs even better with your glass.

Vineyard Sources
We combine estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc with Gewurztraminer and a dash of Chardonnay from long-time grower Frank Johnson Vineyard. The blend puts all the best into the bottle from this friendly combination of three complementary grapes. The vintage brought us a wine showcasing excellent quality, great aromatics, and balanced acidity.

VINEYARD REGIONS Marananga, Barossa Valley.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS Representative of the region, vines
on the Barossa Valley floor arguably benefited from the best
conditions seen within this decade. After above-average winter
rains filled dams to capacity and onset of an early but welcome
spring, budburst brought this sub-region to life in August.
Consistent and slower growth continued and overlaid flowering
and fruit set. Not immune to the small November heatwave,
some shatter and poor set was observed however Shiraz proved
to be quite resilient. December temperatures were much cooler
than November, offering vines ideal growing conditions leading
to veraison in early January. Enduring warmth, minus the
temperature spikes of recent vintages resulted in exceptional
colour development, concentrated flavour development,
accumulating tannins that reached maturity. Difficult to
criticise grape quality upon receival at the winery.

GRAPE VARIETY Shiraz.
MATURATION Matured for 15 months in new French oak
(25%), 1 year-old French oak (25%), new American oak (25%)
and 1 year-old American oak hogsheads (25%).
WINE ANALYSIS Alc/Vol: 14.5%, Acidity: 6.7g/L, pH: 3.60.
LAST TASTED November 2012.
PEAK DRINKING 2015 – 2040.

Tasting Note on release

COLOUR Black centre, purple at rim.
NOSE Granted, a regional Marananga juniper-berry marker evident, yet much more unravels …
A waft of ristretto coffee – first-run – synergises with soy and a dark char, almost tar and pitch. Oak?
Scents of glazed Chinese roast duck (replete with plum sauce) temporarily conjure sensory cues quite distant from the hamlet of Marananga!
And yet further inspection, following aeration and a little time, reveals that what temptingly awaits in the glass can only be Shiraz, can only be Barossa.
PALATE Bright red fruits conspire to create an amalgam, a continuum of flavours basking texturally avec sheen, gloss.
These fruits do not travel solo – chinotto, licorice, bread and butter pudding flavours peddle in parallel, quietly courted by stylish oak(s).
In youth, an (almond/amaretto/pistachio) pan forte flavour/texture gives way to a berried pannacotta-flavoured aftertaste.
Tempting as it may be to partake early, it is not too difficult to sense how this wine’s tannin register and structure will ably convey its passage across time.

Tasting Notes
Vivid ripe red berry aromatics burst on the nose as traces of white flowers and sarsaparilla add complexity. A full, rich entry reveals blackberry mingled with raspberry and pomegranate. Bright acidity bathes the palate balancing the juicy fruit essence, while toasty oak and hints of black pepper, brown spices, and floral notes add interest and depth. The lush intense flavors fuse near the finish as the wine lingers.

This is the perfect Zin to pair with Italian braised pork shoulder ragu or a meat lover’s pizza.

Jamie Peterson’s Vintaged View
Old School is sometimes described as our “Easy Drinking, No Thinking” Zin, but don’t let that make you think it’s any less serious of a wine than our other bottlings.
After nearly ten years putting together a value-priced Zin blend from various Sonoma County grapes, our friend and grower in Mendocino, Alvin Tollini, let us know he had a mature Zinfandel vineyard coming available, and would we be interested in the fruit. We took the opportunity to create a new wine in our line of Tollini Vineyard offerings that would showcase what juicy Zin grapes from the hills of Mendocino’s Redwood Valley could produce.

Old School has a style that is full of flavor and character, but not over the top. We want a wine that is refreshing, “highly drinkable”, and satisfying. The type of Zin you can either open on a weeknight or take to a party without hesitation. One you can think about and savor…but you really don’t have to. By blending in percentages of Petite Sirah and Carignane, we complement the fruit and jam of the Zin with structure, balance, and spice, without overwhelming the singular terroir of this special place.

: 2020 Cullen Wines Grace Madeline Cullen Vineyard
(Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River)

Revision 1: edited by LindsayM on 5/19/2024 (view)
2020 Grace Madeline
Grace Madeline is Diana Madeline’s mother and Vanya Cullen’s maternal grandmother. This wine named in her honour is a blend of 93% Sauvignon Blanc and 7% Semillon.
The Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon vines were planted on their own roots in 1976, and are farmed with 100% certified biodynamic, carbon positive methods. The 2020 vintage produced low yields but beautiful fruit quality, leading to wines of effortless grace.
This excellent fruit quality enabled complexity in the winemaking. The Sauvignon Blanc was whole bunch basket pressed, with whole bunch amphorae skin contact fermentation, creating phenolic tension and mouthfeel with beautiful texture on the palate. The Semillon component was crushed with 4 days skin contact. Barrel-aged for 6 months in 68% new oak

VINTAGE NOTES
VINTAGE NOTES
2020 vintage was defined by dry conditions from the onset of budburst through to harvest in 2020.
A lower than average rainfall in 2019, and hot dry weather conditions in January, February and March made for almost drought conditions for harvest 2020.
Bunch numbers were about average, but low berry weights due to the dry conditions produced very low yields and wines which were balanced and pretty in nature. The harvest was unaffected by Covid 19 lockdowns as we had finished harvest and most of the fermentations had also finished, we just had the pressing of the red wines. Chardonnay yields were still affected by the previous year’s frost.
Wines of excellent balance and fruit purity, a vintage similar to 2003 in style. Best varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

HISTORY
IHANA - Finnish for wonderful or fantastic - a word Valtteri reserves for the truly exceptional. The collaboration of Valtteri Bottas x Oliver’s Taranga is just that - a celebration of competitive craftsmanship. The stubborn pursuit of excellence is a common thread for Valtteri Bottas and sixth generation grape grower Corrina Wright. And a wine made by two such driven perfectionists was only ever going to be ‘Ihana’, the very word uttered on Valtteri’s first taste. Finding a second home in South Australia, Valtteri’s love for exploring our landscapes and wine regions has led to an inevitable conclusion; the wines of these rolling McLaren Vale vineyards are amongst the very best in the world.

AROMA
All dusty chopped chocolate, cherry berry, vanilla and roasted meats.

WINE & VINTAGE
2022 was another cracking vintage in McLaren Vale. A long, cool ripening period and no heatwaves meant that we had plenty of opportunity to ripen the Shiraz perfectly.

: 2023 Crawford River Riesling
(Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Henty)

Revision 2: edited by LindsayM on 5/15/2024 (view)
About this vintage from the winemaker: “It has always fascinated me how the vineyard ‘wins in the end’, as my father often reminded me. In spite of seasonal conditions, with careful and astute handling in the winery, the wine typically evolves to reflect the site on which it is gown, regardless of the year. The Vigneron in me has always appreciated this philosophy. 2023 was a difficult growing year, but the wine is fine, pure, complex and has a distinct Crawford River stamp.” Belinda Thomson, Vigneron.

Citrus is the dominant feature throughout this wine, in many guises. Soft, lemon curd elements on the nose, with edges of Kaffir lime and pink grapefruit to closely follow. Fresh lime zest and pretty talc are supported by white florals and pith-like textural quality.

The palate is complex, long and even, with the chalky, supple texture lending integrity and wonderful length. Crawford River through and through, with many years ahead of it. Fresh, lively acidity and balanced weight is key to its drinkability now and longevity into the future.

Alcohol: 13.9%
pH: 3.39
Residual Sugar: Dry
Total Acidity: 0.66 grams/100ml
Bottling Date: 05/05/2022
Production: 2,370 Cases

Tasting Notes
The finished wine shows citrus, ripe pear, and green apple in the nose. Hints of lush white peach are noticed as the wine opens up. The sur-lie aging has added richness and complexity, and a touch of toasty oak returns to the finish. Like all of Keenan’s wines, this Chardonnay is a food-worthy wine whose crisp acidity and medium body will accompany a wide variety of cuisine.

Vineyard Notes
Keenan’s 2021 Chardonnay was hand-harvested, de-stemmed, and then gently pressed. The juice was fermented and aged in French and American oak barrels. The wine was left on the lees and the barrels were stirred weekly. No secondary, or malolactic fermentation was carried out, leading to the crisp, citrus character of this wine. The wine was bottled after approximately seven months of aging in the cellar.

“This has a chalky character with sliced apples and pears and hints of lemon zest and dried herbs. Medium- to full-bodied with a creamy, weighty palate, yet the crisp acidity adds freshness and tone. Lingering, textural finish with hints of caramel and pastry. Drink or hold.” –James Suckling

APPEARANCE
Pale straw with a green and golden tinge.

NOSE
Hedonistic high notes of stone flint, firecracker and galangal encompass notes of apple cake, peach, granola, and flamed lime peel. Deeply complex with subtle hints of grapefruit, vanilla, coriander seed and bergamot. More savoury elements will unveil with time in the bottle.

PALATE
A super long, seamless palate, running pure, intense and fragrant. The incredible satin texture displays a waxy warm core of fruit. The flavours draw long with pine/galangal, pear, apple and lime curd. A classically fresh finish with beautiful, fine- boned dryness.

WINEMAKER COMMENTS
Our most unique small vineyard sections where the Gingin clone on specific aspect and soil interplay in such a way to ignite very special varietal and wild yeast influence. A similar harvest time to the reasonably late 2021 vintage due to cool spring conditions, fortuitously a warm January saw ripening accelerate with ideal sugar and flavour ripeness. With high natural acidity, natural MLF was allowed to complete. Delicate, tightly held flavours has resulted in beautiful restraint and balance. Hand-harvested, whole-bunches were pressed and transferred direct to barrel as unclarified juice. Only natural yeasts from the vineyard fermented the wine which was nurtured in our cellar for 15 months, 8 of which were in oak with some lees stirring, before 7 months in tank on full lees. 100% Gingin clone and true to Heytesbury perfume and structure. A savoury, delicate and beautifully structured, complex wine in a delayed, yet moderately warm harvest year.

VINTAGE DESCRIPTION
A cool, winter-like spring saw vine growth delayed in development. Rainfall in October was significant. A dry and warm summer, with sustained warmth day and night through December, January and February, possibly influenced by another La Niña season, saw a rapid ripening period for all white varieties, with all vineyards harvested in little over a month. Fruit quality was excellent with surprising delicacy and elegance. A low yielding vintage, primarily due to spring conditions over the past two years. Warm and rapid veraison for whites in January was ideal and saw the Chardonnay’s desirable ripe flavours pronounce themselves quickly. Vine health remained fantastic, with fruit quality high and flavours concentrated.
