Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Bruno Paillard Champagne Extra Brut Premiere Cuvée

    France, Champagne

Served from magnum. Real energy and zip - some citrus, some sherbet - no apple, maybe a hint of brioche. Jolly nice stuff.

  • 2015 Ferrando Carema White Label (Etichetta Bianca)

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Carema

Ha well - these seem to alternate don't they. Very advanced colour, made me a little apprehensive. Lovely nose, bit of bramble, bit of earth. On the palate, still some fruit, lovely structure, not overly boozy. Great stuff. The colour makes me think it's time to drink these but - at the prices paid, even if one bottle out of three goes down the sink it's not bad value.

  • 2016 Domaine Vincent & Jean-Pierre Charton Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy

France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey 1er Cru

The last time I remember drinking a Mercury it was bought from Majestic when I'd learned that Burgundy was nice and saw this was burgundy...

This was lovely - purple colour, lots of life in it, very fruit forward but no jamminess. Possibly my impression was coloured by the fact that this was brought round by old friends we hadn't seen for years but - thoroughly joyous wine enjoyed on a thoroughly joyous occasion.

  • 2012 J. K. Carriere Pinot Noir Vespidae

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Did we need another bottle? No. Did we open another bottle? Yes. Were we being fair to this wine? Probably not. Real complexity here, real depth - a strange kind of openness marks it out as new world pinot but, again, no jamminess at all. This is a really good example of what it is, and I'd say objectively a better wine than what we had before but...once again I'm reminded that I don't really like Pinot Noir, I just like Burgundy.
