Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jscalia on 10/13/2017 & rated 92 points: Beautiful wine. Loads of extract. Good Fruit. Firm tannins. Very characteristic of a Right Bank Bordeaux. At 19 years young, it still has lots of life" (1042 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 4/5/2014 & rated 91 points: 91 and drinking well. No detailed notes due to group dinner. (2358 views)
Tasted by BVal on 3/23/2014 & rated 90 points: Color: medium ruby -> diffuse garnet rim. Bouquet of cassis, plums, strawberries and cedar. Balanced palate of cassis, tobacco, sour cherry, vanilla, nice acidity and a medium-long finish that is starting to show some drying tannins. Very nice, quite mature and, I'm pretty sure, at the end of its optimum drinking plateau. Time to drink up if you've got any left! (2344 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 3/8/2014 & rated 86 points: Dull violet with a touch of brown. Cassis with vanilla on the nose - smells like angel sex. The wine is dull now but you can clearly reverse engineer how nice it once was. Still pleasant. (2349 views)
Tasted by BVal on 11/9/2012 & rated 90 points: Color: medium ruby -> ruby/garnet rim. Bouquet of strawberries and plums. Slight aroma of spice and vanilla. Palate showed a mature, balanced wine with good acid and a medium length finish. Some mature cabernet cassis, tobacco and a little smoke for good measure. Nice. Probably best to drink over the next 3 years or so. (2804 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 8/9/2011 & rated 90 points: Garnet red with the beginnings of a slight browning. Very aromatic red fruits and spices. Upon decanting this had a vinegary tang, but it mostly faded after an hour or so. Strawberry and raspberry laced with orange peel and hints of Christmas spices. There is still a slight hint of vinegar and some mustiness. Strong red fruits and an astringent mouth-feel dominate the finish, which lasts a couple of minutes at least. Light to mid-bodied. (2351 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 11/5/2010 & rated 93 points: Decanted for two hours+. Dark crimson red. This is a strongly perfumed wine with must and vanilla candy on the nose, very similar to old Bordeaux. Oh My God this is delicious. Were it not for the slightly stronger alcohol this would be absolutely indistinguishable from a 10-15 year, perfectly stored Grand Cru from the St. Julien region. A gorgeous mix of red and black fruits but damned if I can draw them out individually. Strawberry is there, as is raspberry liquor mixed with perhaps plums and blackberries. Lovely finish that lingers and continues to evolve in the mouth for quite a while. Sublime flavors - my only complaint is that it is a tad hot. Michael Havens, where the hell did you go, and when are you coming back? California needs you! (1543 views)
Tasted by G_H on 10/15/2010 & rated 88 points: Chocolate, Forrest Floor, Brown Sugar, very smooth and well integrated oak, orange peel and mashed potatoes, some licorice, beautifully aged cali cab, with just not enough concentration to merit a better score (1874 views)
Tasted by snowine on 11/14/2009 & rated 92 points: Optimal drinking window. Balanced, integrated tannins--old world sytle. Spectacular bottle of wine. (2136 views)
Tasted by skoppel on 10/18/2009 & rated 92 points: Drinking perfect. Chocolate and smooth tannins went beautifull with steak in a bleu cheese reduction (1394 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 8/1/2001: ($35) Wine Country August 2001: 2/3 Cabernet Franc. Not as good as the 97 to my palate, but quite tasty. Rich fruit, lacking the chocolaty flavors that I enjoyed so much in the 97. Re-taste. (1419 views)

Havens Wine Cellars

Producer website

The original Havens winery was liquidated in 2009. Many of the wine assets were sold with some being released by Cameron Hughes. In 2012, the physical winery itself was acquired and the brand revived.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
