Tasted by fmoehl@yahoo.com on 12/27/2017: Held up well and was really enjoyable. (1346 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 5/10/2014 & rated 91 points: Still drinking well. (3533 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 4/29/2014 & rated 91 points: Still drinking well. (3532 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 5/13/2013: Brambly dark berry fruit, a little hint of vanilla, a touch of barnyard. Fully mature and drinking well. B+ (4426 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 1/6/2013 & rated 84 points: Dull garnet color. Lovely bouquet of roses and mixed berry jam. Though this came off as cooked initially, it calmed down after a couple of hours to reveal jammy notes of overripe raspberry, a bit of coffee, and a touch sweet vanilla. Silken texture. I think it was mildly cooked but a bit of air muted it. As the last few bottles drank very well, I am assuming this was a storage rather than a sell-date problem. (4461 views)
Tasted by NotNYC on 9/24/2012: Exceptional. More Montrose than Montelena.
Deeply satisfying and wishing I had not finished the rest of the case years ago. (4029 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 6/2/2012 & rated 95 points: Wow, a really outstanding bottle. The color is dark ruby. The nose exploded after about a half hour with chocolate, plum, dark cherry, leather and cedar. The mouthfeel is rich and luxurious with mild, integrated tannins. On the palate the dark fruit and leather hit first then you get a long aftertaste of the cedar and chocolate that I really like. The flavors are complex and layered. I wish I had more of this one! (2531 views)
Tasted by snowine on 4/2/2012 & rated 94 points: This wine is absolutely spectacular! No one that I am aware of in the new world is making a blend like this. If anyone knows of a similar Merlot/Cab Franc blend that is in this style, please post the information. Michael Havens, if you read this, you need to make this wine again. You have a lot of fans who are hanging on to their last few bottles of this amazing wine. BTW, I love the Merlot Reserve too. The nose, mid palate, and finish are great! (2290 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 3/18/2012 & rated 89 points: Not as good as past bottles, but still had that great earthiness that I associate with Bordeaux. (1482 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 2/26/2012 & rated 84 points: From the half-case purchased from Winebid.com, this first bottle from the lot was a bit vinegary. Here''s hoping the others are better. (1300 views)
Tasted by ecwingen on 2/24/2012 & rated 94 points: Good god I love this wine. I cannot believe how complete it is. I've two left, and will be sure to keep good notes on them; I drank this alone, and it was fabulous. (1334 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 12/12/2011 & rated 93 points: Excellent. There are a lot of Havens' afficionados and, while I don't think the reserve merlot is great, the Bourriquot (a good deal of cabernet franc) is spectacular. Consistent over two bottles purchased from an Acker auction. Comparable: Ernie Banks. (1567 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 8/15/2011 & rated 92 points: Decanted and consumed right away over ~2hours. 13.5% ABV, Color still very dark, not showing much visible signs of age. Initial aromas are very funky, complex, lots of barnyard, earth, some red fruit. Palate has similar attributes with the barnyard flavors apparent with red currant, leather, earthy flavors with some green peppercorn. Fruit is really backseat to the secondary and tertiary flavors. With time and air, the barnyard flavors and aromas dissipate (but never blow off completely), and reveal more cabernet franc flavors with more tobacco and other green flavors. Very complex, and I think most would be surprised, and hard pressed to peg this for a California wine blind. Very well done, and having a wine like this reminds me what a shame it is that this under appreciated winery went under. (1794 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 7/4/2011: Very dark purple. Somewhat mild nose of crushed blackberries. I left this one on the counter too long before trying it and I don't feel it is fair to score it. Still decent and drinkable. (1835 views)
Tasted by ecwingen on 5/8/2011 & rated 94 points: Outstanding bottle. The floral and mineral bouquet is beautiful and accurately anticipates the dominant notes in the mouth. The dried cherry and plum flavors form a background to support the non-fruit notes. The acidity is balanced and bright, The feel is light, almost like a pinot. Fabulous wine at its peak. Probably should drink over the next 2 years. (2098 views)
Tasted by bmarshall on 4/10/2011 & rated 94 points: Tremendous showing... this wine has matured and is showing beautiful secondary notes. The nose still has plenty of primary fruit with black cherries and plum, along with floral notes, eucalyptus, pine forest floor, minerals and earth. Some iodine and menthol creep into the nose as well. Palate is full bodied, but the tannins are very mellow at this point, yielding a silky smooth mouth feel. Palate has plenty of fruit and minerals and the acidity is hanging in there. Nice, lingering finish. Will likely hang in there for another year or so, but drink up as it is wonderful now. Wish I had some more. (2067 views)
Tasted by saturnaisland on 7/23/2010 & rated 92 points: I first tasted this wine soon after release while visiting the Napa Valley. Probably the most enjoyable tastings of our visit to Napa that year. The brochure we had said an appointment was needed so I called up and they scheduled us for that afternoon. My wife and I and another couple were at the tasting. Not many people there but they brought out lots of bottles. We tasted through several different bottles and after a while Michael Havens came out and chatted with us and joined in the tasting. We ordered a case of their wine and it has been hiding in my "cellar" ever since. The two Havens wines I liked best at the time were the Syrah and the Bourriquot. I found the Bourriquot today in the cellar and thought I'd try it (fortunately there are a few more bottles still left). Totally awesome wine. There was a slight hint of iodine when first opened that blew off. Eucalyptus , cedar, and plum and dark fruits; hints of tobacco. Very smooth and mellow, well integrated. Great with the steak we had, but not bad on its own. Do they still make wines like this in Napa? Oh for the good old days.... (2459 views)
Tasted by bmarshall on 6/28/2010 & rated 93 points: Found this wine to be in excellent shape. Dark purple color with just a little browning. Beautiful nose of blackberry, eucalyptus, forest floor and smokey tobacco notes. Medium to full bodied palate still had plenty of dark fruits with very well integrated tannins. Long finish. Perfect with grilled ribeyes. (2479 views)
Tasted by bmarshall on 12/7/2009 & rated 91 points: Similar to previous notes... strong showing, but should drink anything you have left in the near term. (2873 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 11/2/2009: Dark berry fruit, a little horsey note well in the background, cedar, firm but smooth tannins. Earthy notes, good acids, nice structured midweight. B+/A- (2986 views)
Tasted by ToddR911 on 10/5/2009 & rated 90 points: Very nice blend of 2/3 cab franc and 1/3 merlot. This was my second bottle and even better than the first. Since I had not tried it before I only bought those couple of bottles but now I'll have to get some more!... (2996 views)
Tasted by lestergibo on 5/30/2009 & rated 91 points: Absolutely delicious bottle of wine! (3277 views)
Tasted by mdstenner on 1/21/2009 & rated 92 points: Gorgeous. Mature. Pretty dense color for such an evolved age, dark ruby with some orange tints. The nose is full of sexy dense earth, with currants and some underlying herbaceous notes that come more to the fore with a little air. Also hints of tarragon and licorice. The palate is soft but chewy with resolved tannins, and seamless mature fruit - currants, licorice - with tobacco as it sits in the mouth. This all leads to a perfectly balanced finish, with some bite at the end. An effective vein of acidity runs throughout. This is drinking well now, and probably has a few years ahead of it. (3225 views)
Tasted by bmarshall on 12/14/2008 & rated 92 points: Have had this wine twice before and it has never disappointed. This is in prime condition now. Dark fruits, berries, tobacco, asparagus, minerals and forest floor on the nose. The palate is medium-full bodied with plenty of acidity, fruit, spices and some smokey notes carry through. Tannins have mellowed and are well integrated. Finish is very nice. A classic old world right bank wine from Napa. Love it. (3241 views)
Tasted by ToddR911 on 10/15/2008 & rated 89 points: Very nice. Drank this with some spectacular mexican paella from NYC takeout but this wine would be good with lots of dishes or on its own. There is not a lot of Cab Franc out there; on a recent trip to Sonoma one of the winemakers was explaining how it was hard to work with so many don't bother. Well that's too bad because this CF/Merlot blend hits the mark and has a very nice flavor. Good value buy and I will get it again. (3270 views)

Havens Wine Cellars

Producer website

The original Havens winery was liquidated in 2009. Many of the wine assets were sold with some being released by Cameron Hughes. In 2012, the physical winery itself was acquired and the brand revived.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
