Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 282 notes)

Tasted by sbhall on 1/28/2024: Recent-ish notes from other tasters are accurate; this wine is still drinking very well, and indeed feels relatively youthful. It needs plenty of air - 6 hours of slow ox didn’t do it, but 90 minutes in a decanter after that was beneficial. There is some sediment. The wine is an icon, even if a mass-produced one, and other tasting notes can provide the descriptions that might be necessary. I think it’s edged outside of the value range since perhaps 2019, but if you can find a mature bottle at €150 or under, it’s a worthy experience. (830 views)
Tasted by streethawk on 1/19/2024: Decanted for sediment in an old wine decanter. Drinking beautifully right now with notes of earth, black tea, leather, herbs, dried cherries. Medium bodied with impressive depth. Not the most muscular vintage of Tig but highly enjoyable if you like this style. I wouldn’t wait much longer to drink these. (904 views)
Tasted by Bolzano2022 on 12/25/2023 & rated 92 points: I double decanted it an hour before our drinking. The wine is still very youthful. It has decent tannin. The nose was beautiful with red berries and black berries. Pronounced intensity of nose. Palate confirms the nose. (940 views)
Tasted by phandley66 on 10/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Drinking really well. Cherry, cranberry, cassis, graphite. Very bright vibrant. Drink now. Opened an hour before pouring, no decant. (1201 views)

Tasted by Margaux Bro on 6/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Double decanted 2 hours before going to a restaurant. Truly should have decanted about 2 hours earlier, as it really hit its stride later in the evening. This wine elevated tremendously once food was incorporated, and continued to develop. Very pleasurable wine. If you're opening now I'd suggest a very long decant. It will still age gracefully for another 20+ years. (2800 views)
Tasted by Cellarseller on 5/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Opened for an hour then aerated into glasses. Probably could still use a decant as the wine improved over an hour with dinner. (2362 views)
Tasted by Mchiarot on 12/27/2021 & rated 94 points: Superb. This is a well balanced Big, and still had years left in my opinion. went very nicely with oven roasted Prime rib (3054 views)
Tasted by Weinberg Falls on 11/25/2021 & rated 92 points: Nose of black cherry, blueberry compote, woodsmoke, black olives and just the very slightest whiff of vanilla from the still-present oak. Tightly woven palate of cassis, red and black cherries and licorice with still firm tannins and a long, long finish of fruit compote, spices and dried herbs. Interestingly I’ve had more modern Tigs that felt more ready to drink, perhaps this wasn't given enough time to breathe and unfurl. Still gorgeous, 92-93 (3003 views)
Tasted by popasq on 8/29/2021 & rated 96 points: This has aged very well. Impressive! (2825 views)
Tasted by Roland67 on 4/30/2021 & rated 93 points: From PnP very Bx like in the nose. Concentrated blackcurrant and cassis on the palate. Long finish with fine minerality and sone notes of anis. Nice complexity. Surprisingly vital for a 16 year old wine. Could easily be cellared for another decade I guess but also drink very well now. Give it a short decant or let it rest ½ hour in the glass before start sipping. Love it. 92-94P (2727 views)

Tasted by Zinlady on 1/6/2021 & rated 94 points: I was impressed. At first seemed very mellow. Finish long but subdued Then after 15 minutes in glass it showed some tannins. Tasted some violets. Lovely wine. (2136 views)
Tasted by Rareified Air on 1/5/2021 & rated 93 points: Decanted 2 hours in a magnum size decanter.

The wine looks crimson coloured. There was light sediment in the bottle. It smells like dust, oak, lead pencil, violet and tobacco. The body is full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long with a well rounded balance.

The wine has medium acidity and could even be kept a few years longer yet for those keen to test the limits. (1702 views)
Tasted by xiangjing91 on 12/25/2020 & rated 92 points: Double decanted. Medium garnet/tawny in colour. Plums, licorice on the nose. Tannic still, with medium+ acidity. Probably not going to get any better but can still be kept for 1-3 years since it is still taste a little vibrant (1595 views)

Tasted by WKC on 9/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted for around two hours and was pleasantly surprised as to how tasty and drinkable this became. Paired nicely with seafood salad, vongole, less so with the lamb. Drank from double magnum. (1978 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 4/10/2020 & rated 91 points: Dark red with violet-garnet at the edges. White and black pepper with muted black fruits on the nose. Sour blackberries with wild strawberries and notes of navel orange. The citrus is joined by orange pith into a lengthy finish. It’s still drinking quite tightly even after a few hours decant. (3190 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 1/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Dull garnet brown with sediment apparent at the edges. Macerated red fruits on the nose and notes. Very tasty. (3392 views)
(3487 views)
Tasted by Puristica on 11/21/2019 & rated 93 points: Beautifully balanced and aged, was best p&p but lost a bit after 2 hours. Next bottle in 2 to 4 years. (3302 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 11/9/2019 & rated 90 points: Dark red towards black; dark cherries, licorice; gentle attack, licorice, a bit tannic in the middle and the end, ending in general a bit too acidic and tannic to my taste (3130 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 11/2/2019 & rated 92 points: In the perfect drinking spot right now. Round and beautifully balanced. Lots of red fruits and some mushroomy notes in the background. Very nice. (2318 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 9/28/2019 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about 3 hours.

Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of soapstone, tobacco, spice box and mixed dark fruits. Flavors of currants, black cherries and earth. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold. (2344 views)
Tasted by KVM on 8/1/2019: Very dark. Nose has raw meat, blackberries and blackberry preserve cigar box and later shows menthol. This has more than ample concentration, full body with strong and balanced tannin. Flavour runs to blackberry, spice, black tea. Long finish with licorice. So this is excellent and is singing right now. (2502 views)
Tasted by dbenglis on 7/28/2019 & rated 92 points: Deep violet. Vibrant fruit. Enjoyable. Last drunk in late 2017. Has matured and developed. (2203 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 7/9/2019 & rated 89 points: A blend of Sangiovese (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Aged for 12 months in new French oak barriques. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Deep and only barely translucent cherry red color with a hint of developed mahogany hue. The nose feels very developed and even rather tertiary with aromas of prunes and dried cherries, some soy sauce, a little bit of beef jerky, light raisiny notes of oxidation, a hint of ripe blackcurrant and a touch of savory old wood. I'm guessing 1980's Bordeaux at this point. The wine is dry, full-bodied and very structured on the palate with aged, earthy and very tertiary flavors of sour cherries, fresh blackcurrants, some wizened black cherries, a little bit of leather, light bittersweet notes of black chocolate, developed hints of beef jerky and soy sauce and a touch of tobacco. The wine is still impressively structured with its high acidity and assertive, grippy tannins. The finish is very grippy and tightly-knit with intense, dry and tertiary flavors of earth, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of soy sauce, light sweeter notes of raisins, a hint of beef jerky and a touch of savory oak spice.

I was quite certain this was an older Bordeaux, most likely from the mid 1980's. I was surprised to learn that, first, this was from the 21st century and, secondly, it was a Sangiovese-driven blend, not a Bordeaux blend. Certainly the Cab Sauvignon components did show as notes of blackcurrant that made me think instantly of Bordeaux, but I was very surprised to learn how very evolved this vintage was. I'm not sure if this was just a lesser bottle, or if this particular vintage has just developed at much faster pace than the surrounding ones, but I must admit that I've had some Tignanello wines from the 1970's that have tasted less evolved. This was an enjoyable aged wine, but ultimately not what I'd have in mind when popping open a bottle of Tig. (1665 views)

Tasted by maxima on 1/8/2019 & rated 93 points: Super beau vin encore une fois...souple, complexe, bien équilibré
superbe TIGN...constant! (4444 views)

Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of saddle leather, soapstone, dishwater and rusted iron. Flavors of boysenberries, raspberries and Bing cherries over an earthy finish. Tangy acidity, medium to firm tannin, full bodied. Drink over the short term. (4650 views)

Tasted by Paui on 2/18/2018 & rated 92 points: drunk over three days. Very primary, lots of fruit the first day. Smooth on day two. Best on day three, tannins and structure coming through. (5475 views)
Tasted by dbenglis on 12/31/2017 & rated 89 points: Dark ruby, heat on the nose with a background of must. There is pleasant black fruit initially on the palette that develops into strong tannin (I don't mind this at all). This subsides after a decant. The 5% cab franc and 10 percent cab sauvignon lend to a nice Old World complexity. I purchased at HDH 6 bottles. I have 5 left and am not convinced that this wine is in its final march. (4742 views)
Tasted by nouveau collector on 12/9/2017 & rated 91 points: Similar experience to other recent reviewers. It needed almost and hour to come to life after tasting a bit rasin-like upon opening. Still a dry finish but a nice flavour profile after two hours (kept cool in the fridge). The cork on this bottle was crumbing at the top but intact halfway down with a solid seal. Seems like near term drinking. (4944 views)
Tasted by mottoman on 12/4/2017 & rated 93 points: I had the same experience as a recent Nov 2017 comment where once given some air, it opened up very nicely. The tannins have muted to be nice and smooth. Classic Super Tuscan taste. (3920 views)
Tasted by Johehn on 11/11/2017 & rated 93 points: This was a surprise after seen the last comments on T-05. My bottle was magic. I was afraid it would die after 20 minutes, but still after 4 hours it kept on getting better... yummie, yummie. I say wait - not a big nose at first, but wait - air will give an experience to the balance... smells very Tuscany, almost like great Brunello (3202 views)

Tasted by MikePVD on 7/1/2017 & rated 90 points: Brick red color. Red fruits typical of sangiovese on the nose. Medium body. Fine tannins. Good acidity. Has lost some fruit. Did improve subtly over 2 hours. At or just past peak. (5021 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 6/25/2017 & rated 90 points: translucent red-purple

medium bodied, soft tannins, red fruits, over the peak, though still enjoyable. (4678 views)
Tasted by Yorgos on 6/11/2017 & rated 91 points: Initially reductive and closed. With aeration it revealed medium intensity scents of red and dark fruit, undergrowth and sweet spice. A tad tired on the nose however. the palate was lively and full of life, with round tannins and balancing acidity with medium to long finish. Quite nice. Decanting required due to quiet a bit of sediment.91-92 (4874 views)

Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 5/14/2017 & rated 79 points: Tasted several bottles in the last weeks that were in my cellar for years under optimal conditions. Wine is too old now. Seems slightly oxidated in the beginning, but 'dies in the glass'. (4186 views)

Tasted by mmh on 1/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Quite big and powerful. On day one it was a bit anonymous with big, bold, modern fruit. On day two it was more complex and elegant. Not as big but more balanced and more to my liking. Apparently it could use some more time in the cellar to improve. (4214 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 11/23/2016 & rated 93 points: Nose: Very perfumed and full of black cherry, raspberry, dark flowers, sweet oak and furniture polish. Palate: Initially needed time for the oak to integrate, but this became quite elegant. Suave layers of black fruit, red berries, oak and spice tones came through and the Sangiovese delivered a nice lifted element to this wine. Finish: long and a bit drying.

This was excellent. I'll be on the lookout for more of the 2005. (4621 views)
Tasted by WineGuyDelMar on 11/21/2016 & rated 92 points: Losing some fruit but still a really good wine. The nose is a little musty, barnyard and has a nice medium/full mouth feel with lots of earth and minerality. I'm not sure this is going to get much better at this point. (4412 views)
Tasted by NickP on 9/26/2016 & rated 93 points: Paired with a wonderful housemade tagliatelle with real, homemade Bolognese sauce, this was a terrific pairing and a real treat. The wine was fragrant and had a beautiful bouquet of dark fruit and some funk while decanting. Color was red-purple but with a bit of brick showing on the edges. Balance was excellent between acid, tannin and alcohol. On the palate the fruit was plums, dark berries perhaps a touch of fig, cherry, and then the funkier elements came out. Some barn (but not a lot) a bit of leather/tobacco. Terrific, long finish. Overall a great wine with a great meal. I do think this wine - at least this bottle - is at its peak and unless well-maintained not sure it would last more than a couple years. (5037 views)
Tasted by Adonisd1956 on 7/30/2016 & rated 93 points: Saddle leather, pipe tobacco, black plum on the nose. Fresh hint of fruit on entry! Very soft tannins, finish is really enjoyable. This is really good. IMHO. Glad I have a few more bottles. (5093 views)
Tasted by Arch57 on 5/7/2016 & rated 95 points: My daughter and son-in-law surprised us by driving up from NYC on Saturday to cook my wife an Italian dinner for Mother's Day, which was well appreciated as we drove home from a road trip to NC and VA. I ran down to the cellar to pick a few wines to match with eggplant parm and homemade sauce and the Tignanello would fit the bill.
Very elegant wine in a perfect drinking window with a nose you can detect 2" above the rim and a long lasting finish. Superb! (5756 views)
Tasted by chatters on 4/19/2016: working with wine 2016 seminar 1 - tuscany (Hilton Hotel, Sydney): Warm and welcoming, leather, slight oxidation, tiny touches of balsamic, dark fruits over spice and mushroom. Lovely nose. In the mouth the wine is juicy and fleshy, tiny touches of white pepper on the palate with beautifully integrated fruit and tannins with slight herbaceous notes joining spice on the long finish. Very nice and in a good place for me. Lovely in fact. (5692 views)

Tasted by stockshooter on 3/27/2016 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 1hr+ then drank over 3hrs ... just a little sediment .. opened up a bit more after 2hrs+.

Not a lot on the nose (not unusual for the '05), but a hint of dark berries, cherries.

Lots of dark fruit, berries and black currants with very smooth tannins .. Very clean & balanced with that rustic sangiovese 'Tig' taste.

Overall one of the best '05's opened up in recent time!

Great way to kick off BBQ season! Paired with BBQ steak, roasted hasselback potatoes & veggies.

Great bottle! No doubt many years left easily! 94+ (4712 views)

Tasted by NickyBull on 8/20/2015 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2 hours prior, some sediment, however the air really helped the wine open up. Great color, dark rich fruit, dark chocolate on the front end, nice long finish. Last of the 2005's, now on to the 2006's. (6096 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 8/15/2015 & rated 93 points: Very good. Deep dark red/black color. Still had lots of fruit, not the in your face fruit. But the balanced, mellowed fruit that assures that the wine has many more years. It still had some tannin. Drank over 2 hours, didn't change much. Needs more air/time to change. Long finish.  Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/2/2015: Nothing like my previous experience, this managed some prettiness, but remained fairly linear and compact on the night. With too many bottles already open, this had nearly 2/3 left for night 2 where this showed much more of its potential, its inner beauty. Medium-bodied, elegant and built to last, let this rest another 5 years if you want the complete package. 13,5% abv., recommended

Double decanted (lots of sediment), served non-blind 4 hours later. HOLD.

Tasted by MNig on 7/11/2015 & rated 92 points: The bouquet is quite lovely here. Morello cherry, black currant, leather, tobacco, prune, dried fig, cardamom and nutmeg. I have aromas of sweetish fruit on the palate. Dark berries and cherry, along with leather, a hint of aceto balsamico and wood. Prominent, but ripe and rather smooth tannins, good structure, full-bodied and higher alcohol. Long-lasting finish. This has aged rather well and is quite fun at the moment. Drink or hold.

Schattenmorelle, Cassis, LEder, Tabak, Dörrpflaume, getrocknete Feige, Kardamon, Muskatnuss. Süßliche Frucht, präsente aber reife und weiche Tannine, gute Säure, körperreich, kräftiger Alkohol. Secondary flavors just starting to emerge. This is in a good place right now. Integrated yet dusty drying tannin. So fresh and vibrant. This gets better and better the longer it sits in air. Complex and Structured. Decanted 3 hours. Drink now-2020 (5894 views)
Tasted by KVM on 4/17/2015: Very dark. Powerful nose of black currant and later black currant liqueur and vanilla. In the mouth it is blackcurrant, considerable concentration and a tannic finish. Drank along side the 2006 which was lighter on its feet and my preferred bottle. Very good in a napa Cabernet style. Think I'll move it into a “warmer” spot in the cellar, because it is not maturing. Much better the next night but still a restrained wine. Very much an old world wine, which I like , but I had hope for more fruit and a more aromatic wine. Good not great at present. More time in the cellar. (5794 views)

Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 2/2/2014 & rated 92 points: Just tasted a 2005 Antinori Tignanello from Toscana. Dark ruby color turning violet at the rim with a nose of tobacco, leather and dried herbs. The palate is bold, rigidly structured, dry and intense with flavors of espresso, black currant, suede leather and graphite. Finishes long and sumptuous with hints of smoked oak and vanilla.  Tasted by Tim Heaton on 1/18/2014: Slow-O one hour, served double-blind. Dark brick-red core, no sign of age. Opens with aromas of hot stones, iodine, black cherry, a healthy dose of funk-a-licious, and a peppercorn or two. Still somewhat backward on the medium-bodied palate, this instantly displays great structure, and compellingly honest purity. I named this Mighty Joe Young - it's a larger than life bruiser (if a traditionally-styled/built wine can be), in the best sense of the word, but just too young to be fully expressive. 13,5% abv, highly recommended. I don't own any, which makes me a fool. But now that I know, this is a (no-brainer) future purchase.

Palate: Cross between bordeaux and CA Cab on the palate with great dense fruit, but the elegant tannin profile and brett of a good aged bordeaux. Finish: Tart with red raspberry fruit notes and sage/eucalyptus. More leather as well.

Tasted by wallstreet on 6/7/2013 & rated 91 points: Very good wine, decanted for approx. 1 hour. Wine still needs some more time to be at it's best. Not quite at the level of 04 or 06, but still a very nice wine that should improve with 3-5 more years on its side. (5875 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 5/9/2013 & rated 92 points: A really good Tuscan wine from a very good vintage.
This wine is so very typical Toscana in style.
Nice signs of beginning maturity.
A good and red fruit filled nose, with Tuscan cherries, olives, earth and a touch of truffle, and fine Cab Franc herbal spices showing.
On the palate it is full with plenty of dark cherries, some earthiness, very good acidity and finely grinded tannins.
Ripe and balanced, with a fairly long finish.
Very nice showing tonight, drinking very well now, but no need to rush, as this will continue to develop. (6407 views)

Tasted by nortonnose on 3/11/2013 & rated 92 points: Slow oxed from 750ml for about an hour (no decanter available), then slowly sipped with friends over olives, cheese and crackers for the next two hours. Fine wine obviously, but still needs at least a couple more years to integrate. Beautiful deep garnet color. Nose and palate were both a bit reticent; not surprisingly, Night Two revealed much more of its character. Wonderful boysenberry and plum nose. Some wonderful vegetal notes on the palate (brought out by the touch of Cab Franc?). Medium finish (even on Night Two). Hold for 3-7 more years. (5427 views)
Tasted by Arch57 on 3/1/2013 & rated 94 points: I am definitely tossing a 94 pointer on this one. I had the pleasure of sampling this at an Antinori tasting at my local wine shop last Wednesday along with the 2009 vintage. The 09 was too young to evaluate but the 05 was perfect and they were blowing out the last 11 bottles had in inventory so I grabbed two.
Opened but not decanted at 3pm and served at 6pm as we made a bouillobase with mussels, shrimp and oysters over linguini and of course lots of garlic! This wine rocked! Color showed no signs of age and the nose was pure Tuscan delight, leather, forest floor, red fruit, etc. Paired perfectly with the dinner and got even better after the dishes were washed and we savored the last glass. Bravo! (5176 views)
Tasted by rhpolk on 2/15/2013 & rated 93 points: 2005 Antinori Tignanello was a perfect super tuscan to take to a great Italian restaurant. Beautiful dark purple, mild fruit, tobacco flavor. It has aged perfectly. It's might improve a little more, but my guess is that the fruit is fading. If you like fruit- drink it this year. If you like a little more age- drink in 2014. (5130 views)

It was absolutely smooth, elegant and an exceptional wine. Tobacco, mocha, cherry, allot going on. Well integrated tannins good acidity but I think it is either entering or at its peak so I suggest trying now and determine for yourself. The additional time I waited made this well worth the wait. Great effort. Oh, and while I know this is Sangiovese blend it comes across like a 2nd or 3rd growth Bordeaux. (5248 views)

Tasted by BillyT on 10/10/2011 & rated 92 points: I'm wondering if the 1.5 hour decant was not enough or is this wine in a dumb phase. Color is deep garnet to the rim with just a very slight hint of brick as you get to the rim. Legs are strong and supple lingering down the side of the glass. Nose seems of black fruit, rasberries, strawberries, chocolate, leather, beef, blood, white pepper, menthol. 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon e 5% Cabernet Franc and very expressive of the Sangiovese but the Cabernet Sauvignon falls to the Cabernet Franc. Mid palate of deep dark chocolate, black and red fruit, silky tannins and bright acidity and spice on both the tip of the tongue and on the finish with a lingering herbal after taste. This wine is evolving nicely after several hours. I would continue my previous openings at 4 or more hours before drinking as in my previous note. (9773 views)

Tasted by wineretriever on 5/7/2011 & rated 92 points: Only opened just over an hour before we drank - good thing we did. A very floral nose, roses with a sulphuric quality. Is that the Cab? First glass continued the cabernet line, soft tannins combining with tobacco leaf and berries. Second glass was a bit more integrated, but then the wine hit a bad spot that makes me skeptical of the longevity. (11388 views)
Tasted by AlanM68 on 4/2/2011 & rated 93 points: - Crimsom color and aromas of licorice anise. It's balanced and has flavours of cherry, licorice anise and vanilla with a medium/full body. Smooth texture with a long finish - This will sound funny perhaps but on the nose, straight from a 30 min (only, I know) decant this smelt of a aniseed. On the mouth I thought of cherries and which acidity - like a Brunello of the same age would taste. Odd perhaps, but that's how it came over to me. This wine has time ahead of it for sure. I'll wait before I touch the remaining bottles in then cellar. (12144 views)

Tasted by BailliSacks on 3/12/2011 & rated 92 points: To this novice super-T drinker, this felt a lot like Bordeaux. Huge and concentrated, very friendly, definitely modern but dryer and steelyer than most new world stuff. I liked it a lot. Felt like it was fighting itself a bit, and i suspect it will benefit greatly from another 5 or so years in the bottle. I feel unqualified to rate this immature wine of an unfamiliar genre, but I'd say at least 92, maybe more in the future. (11788 views)
Tasted by Renegade on 1/29/2011 & rated 94 points: This wine has a dark ruby red color to it, medium bodied and 13.5% alcohol. It gives off aromas of ripe cherries, leather, cocoa powder and pencil shavings. It tastes of cherries, cocoa, leather and a little earth. It is not ready yet, give it 5 more years in the cellar and it should be drinking really good. This should be a good wine 12 to 15 years from vintage date. (12624 views)

Tasted by Tyler_at_WWD on 5/6/2010 & rated 92 points: I immediately pick up on really rich floral tones on the nose. There is also a cherry component, but also something that reminds me of fresh sliced tomatoes. There is a definite terroir to this wine and I feel like I’m in Tuscany as I’m sniffing it. There are brown sugar and cranberry notes with coffee beans and stone mingling flawlessly together to create a really unique, complex nose. The palate opens on ripe dark fruit, dark stone, and a mix of pepper and clove. The fruit is supple and intense at the same time, and I pick up on subtle herbal notes, caramel, and white chocolate tones throughout the mid palate. The finish is long and elegant with very soft pomegranate and brown butter tones running strongly through it. This is an awesome wine, very nice balance of ripeness and supple tannin. It’s very smooth, rich, and comes across as being very well made. Even though at just shy of $100, this wine is nowhere near low priced, I would say that it is an excellent special occasion wine worth buying.

Tasted by WannabeRenaissanceMan on 3/19/2010 & rated 87 points: Nose was cherries, peppers and a bit of mint. It was dry and earthy on the palate with hints of cherry and peppers. Spicier than I expected. It was definitely a bit young and could have benefited from a few more years in the cellar. But in a few years I could be dead, so I might as well try it now :)

Personally, for my palate, I didn't like this wine. However, this was my first "SuperTuscan", so while I was surprised I didn't like it given all the hype surrounding it, it could be because my palate isn't that developed yet. (10538 views)
Tasted by mmh on 3/6/2010 & rated 92 points: Decanted for a few hours, yet it was a bit mute on the nose at first. Opened up nicely with some swirling in the glass. It felt more closed than 15 months ago when i had it without decanting. (11127 views)
Tasted by Khamen on 2/4/2010 & rated 91 points: Seems to be popular with some forum regulars recently so time to join the fun...

Splash decant, quite a purple tinge here but very bright. The initial hit on the nose made my night - Milano salami! Throw in some charcoal bar-b-q'd chicken in there and you have a truly original nose. Some olive oil and herby scrub as well. Savoury, spicy and appetising. Young and tight attack but plenty of concentration in here and ripe plum, cherries and clove. Quite a big whack of oak (seem to see a lot of this from the 2005 Tuscans. Maybe covering some cracks from the less than perfect vintage?). Give it 3 it 4 years and you'll be rewarded but I just love that trashy street-party nose right now. 91+

EDIT : +24 hours in decanter. Nose is much less fun now, full of bright cherries but the riotous carnival of yesterday seems to be over and the hangover is ensuing... Fruit showing the first signs of drying out on the palate, but still good. Strong grippy tannins back-end, and noticeably more sangiovese (and oak!) in character now. In fact the cab seems to have absconded overnight. Decant for 30 mins or so then drink it over the course of an evening. (10461 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 2/3/2010 & rated 91 points: Already very good, will however clearly improve with more aging and anticipate concomitant improvement in ratings score of at least 1-2 points. Years of cellaring potential left. Enjoyed recently with good CT wine buddy neighborbill and spouses as part of a pasta cook-off challenge recently held at our house. Big wine, very dark, big mouth feel, starting to balance out but still quite tannic, long lingering pleasant aftertaste. Huge nose of oak, blueberry and cassis, primary flavors included oak, terroir, allspice, black pepper and development of cigar box and tar later on the palate. Too expensive to be a reasonable QPR, still highly recommend this wine. Will hold off on last bottle for at least a couple of years. (9634 views)
Tasted by wallstreet on 2/3/2010: Opened about 1/2 hour before consuming. No decanting. The nose was filled with blueberry and rasberry scent. Wine took about 1 hour to really open up. While the wine was young of course, it offers a pleasurable experience. An easy drinker if you know what I mean. the mid palate was consistent and even for a young wine was somewhat integrated. Time will improve this wine, but it is rather enjoyable at this young stage, but built to last many years for sure. Medum and satisfying finish, not terribly long. My wife and sister in law loved this wine and paired it with a baked salmon dish. Perfect compliment to my pasta dinner. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (9957 views)

Medium to Medium+ body. more darkly fruited. ben calls blue fruit. orange rind and blackcurrant. florals really aren't even an afterthought.
5 hours in...that corn sweet is showing as an amalgam of honey, peanut, chocolate. Introducing more mineral depth to the nose. Green turned to mineral. Attempting to show damp earthiness. that is also part of the corn sweet. Yes vs. Cepparello, bigger, softer, and more supple tannin. Full minus body with textural grit. This has really opened wildly. Tasted July 14, 2009 off a restaurant wine list.

Opened and decanted. Followed over about 90 minutes. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. The nose on this wine is all that and a bag of chips. Nose of saddle soap, rose petals and black berries; very floral in nature. This youthful wine is still a little tight on the palate giving way to flavors of black berries, black cherries and a dash of currants. Bright acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Continue to hold for at least another year or two before trying again. (9225 views)

You can sense the cabernet is in there but its not as pronouced as I have felt in past vintages. My understanding is that this vintage also has a bit of cab. franc which may be the some what green notes on the nose. We will see where it goes.

2 hours in it has eased into itself more. Showing its sangiovese, but the franc (or at least herby notes) remain. In a nice wine. Barrel still drives on the palate. The signature Tignanello elegance is there, the only question is whether there is enough sheer density to stand up to the wine’s structural components. Today my impression is that there is not, but I still have high expectations for this vintage considering how wines from far lesser years have developed. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.  Tasted by rjeman2000 on 12/31/2008 & rated 92 points: Decanted for five hours. Cedar, black currant, and mocha dust on the nose. Very clean and pure with flavors of fresh cherries, black licorice, and a little spice. Balanced and structured, this is revving up to be a great wine in a few years, but now still a baby. Really enjoyed. (8065 views)
Tasted by Grinder on 12/24/2008 & rated 92 points: Pop and pour at a local restaurant. This should have been decanted and allowed to breath for several hours. Big, brawny tannins, a little heat, and rich black fruit. Plenty of structure for sure, and I have no doubt the material here will make for an outstanding experience between 2015 and 2025. Heartier wine and went great with my filet. raspberry with some oak in the mouth and a seemless well integrated finish. Enjoyed this thoroughly. (8343 views)

Tasted by mmh on 11/21/2008 & rated 94 points: Absolutely fantastic! Had it in an italian resteurant. The wine was not decanted at all, and even though it is so young it was amazing. Incredible balance already. I can only imagine how good it's going to be in a few years. Will definitely buy a few bottles to cellar. (8021 views)

Tasted by BillyT on 1/21/2008 & rated 92 points: Pondered purchasing this wine at home so I splurged on our Med cruise and purchased at dinner. Pop and pour I thought would not prove well but the wine was extremely balanced and velvety immediately out of the bottle and even better the second night at dinner. Fruit forward with some oak and black cherries , soft tannins and little if any spice. Great wine. Decided to purchase 5 bottles when I returned home. May try decanting first this time around from what others have said. (5988 views)

The Antinori family has produced wine since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Winemakers Guild. Throughout its long history (across 26 generations) the family has always managed winemaking in person. Today, the company is managed by Marquis Piero Antinori. The company has dedicated great efforts to improving the quality of its wines, through careful planning of investments and research programs embracing all production aspects. The success of these programs has enabled the company to produce a superb range of quality wines from its various estates in Tuscany and Umbria. The Tignanello Estate is home to the famous Tignanello and Solaia vineyards. Located between the Greve and Pesa Valleys, in the heart of the Chianti Classic area, 30 kilometers south of Florence, Tignanello boasts 350 hectares of land with 147 hectares of vines. The vineyards are divided into small, individual areas over an area of 47 hectares at Tignanello, facing South-West, and the neighboring 10 hectares at Solaia, both with Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes that benefit from specific exposure and micro-climate.

2005 Antinori Tignanello

85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.

Tignanello

The original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard, a 47 hectares (116 acres) southwest-facing, calcareous rocky-marl and limestone soil plot with tufaceous elements, planted between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level at Antinori's Santa Cristina Estate. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety, Cabernet, in the blend, and among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. In all three instances, it set the example for a new breed of exceptional top-of-the-line Italian wine. Tignanello, originally a Chianti Classico Riserva labeled Vigneto Tignanello, was first vinified as a single vineyard wine in the 1970 vintage, when it contained 20% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano and Malvasia, and was aged in small oak cooperage. With the 1971 vintage the wine became a Vino da Tavola della Toscana and was named Tignanello after the vineyard from which it originates. Beginning with this vintage, Tignanello stopped adhering to the rules laid down by Chianti Classico Disciplinare, and with the 1975 vintage, white grapes were totally eliminated. Since the 1982 vintage, the blend has been 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Tignanello was not produced in the 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984 and 1992 vintages.
