Recent-ish notes from other tasters are accurate; this wine is still drinking very well, and indeed feels relatively youthful. It needs plenty of air - 6 hours of slow ox didn’t do it, but 90 minutes in a decanter after that was beneficial. There is some sediment. The wine is an icon, even if a mass-produced one, and other tasting notes can provide the descriptions that might be necessary. I think it’s edged outside of the value range since perhaps 2019, but if you can find a mature bottle at €150 or under, it’s a worthy experience. (903 views)

Double decanted 2 hours before going to a restaurant. Truly should have decanted about 2 hours earlier, as it really hit its stride later in the evening. This wine elevated tremendously once food was incorporated, and continued to develop. Very pleasurable wine. If you're opening now I'd suggest a very long decant. Nose of black cherry, blueberry compote, woodsmoke, black olives and just the very slightest whiff of vanilla from the still-present oak. Tightly woven palate of cassis, red and black cherries and licorice with still firm tannins and a long, long finish of fruit compote, spices and dried herbs. From PnP very Bx like in the nose. Concentrated blackcurrant and cassis on the palate. Long finish with fine minerality and sone notes of anis. Nice complexity. The wine looks crimson coloured. There was light sediment in the bottle. It smells like dust, oak, lead pencil, violet and tobacco. The body is full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long with a well rounded balance.

The wine has medium acidity and could even be kept a few years longer yet for those keen to test the limits. (1709 views)

Dark red with violet-garnet at the edges. White and black pepper with muted black fruits on the nose. Sour blackberries with wild strawberries and notes of navel orange. A blend of Sangiovese (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Aged for 12 months in new French oak barriques. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Deep and only barely translucent cherry red color with a hint of developed mahogany hue. The nose feels very developed and even rather tertiary with aromas of prunes and dried cherries, some soy sauce, a little bit of beef jerky, light raisiny notes of oxidation, a hint of ripe blackcurrant and a touch of savory old wood. I'm guessing 1980's Bordeaux at this point. The wine is dry, full-bodied and very structured on the palate with aged, earthy and very tertiary flavors of sour cherries, fresh blackcurrants, some wizened black cherries, a little bit of leather, light bittersweet notes of black chocolate, developed hints of beef jerky and soy sauce and a touch of tobacco. The wine is still impressively structured with its high acidity and assertive, grippy tannins. The finish is very grippy and tightly-knit with intense, dry and tertiary flavors of earth, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of soy sauce, light sweeter notes of raisins, a hint of beef jerky and a touch of savory oak spice.

I was quite certain this was an older Bordeaux, most likely from the mid 1980's. I was surprised to learn that, first, this was from the 21st century and, secondly, it was a Sangiovese-driven blend, not a Bordeaux blend. Certainly the Cab Sauvignon components did show as notes of blackcurrant that made me think instantly of Bordeaux, but I was very surprised to learn how very evolved this vintage was. I'm not sure if this was just a lesser bottle, or if this particular vintage has just developed at much faster pace than the surrounding ones, but I must admit that I've had some Tignanello wines from the 1970's that have tasted less evolved. This was an enjoyable aged wine, but ultimately not what I'd have in mind when popping open a bottle of Tig. (1668 views)

Similar experience to other recent reviewers. It needed almost and hour to come to life after tasting a bit rasin-like upon opening. Still a dry finish but a nice flavour profile after two hours (kept cool in the fridge). The cork on this bottle was crumbing at the top but intact halfway down with a solid seal. Nose: Very perfumed and full of black cherry, raspberry, dark flowers, sweet oak and furniture polish. Palate: Initially needed time for the oak to integrate, but this became quite elegant. The bouquet is quite lovely here. Morello cherry, black currant, leather, tobacco, prune, dried fig, cardamom and nutmeg. I have aromas of sweetish fruit on the palate. Dark berries and cherry, along with leather, a hint of aceto balsamico and wood. Prominent, but ripe and rather smooth tannins, good structure, full-bodied and higher alcohol. Long-lasting finish. Paired with a wonderful housemade tagliatelle with real, homemade Bolognese sauce, this was a terrific pairing and a real treat. The wine was fragrant and had a beautiful bouquet of dark fruit and some funk while decanting. Color was red-purple but with a bit of brick showing on the edges. Balance was excellent between acid, tannin and alcohol. On the palate the fruit was plums, dark berries perhaps a touch of fig, cherry, and then the funkier elements came out. Some barn (but not a lot) a bit of leather/tobacco. Terrific, long finish. Overall a great wine with a great meal. I do think this wine - at least this bottle - is at its peak and unless well-maintained not sure it would last more than a couple years. (5040 views)

Just tasted a 2005 Antinori Tignanello from Toscana. Dark ruby color turning violet at the rim with a nose of tobacco, leather and dried herbs. The palate is bold, rigidly structured, dry and intense with flavors of espresso, black currant, suede leather and graphite. Finishes long and sumptuous with hints of smoked oak and vanilla. Slow-O one hour, served double-blind. Dark brick-red core, no sign of age. Opens with aromas of hot stones, iodine, black cherry, a healthy dose of funk-a-licious, and a peppercorn or two. Still somewhat backward on the medium-bodied palate, this instantly displays great structure, and compellingly honest purity. I named this Mighty Joe Young - it's a larger than life bruiser (if a traditionally-styled/built wine can be), in the best sense of the word, but just too young to be fully expressive. 13,5% abv, highly recommended. I don't own any, which makes me a fool. But now that I know, this is a (no-brainer) future purchase.

Nice signs of beginning maturity.

Slow oxed from 750ml for about an hour (no decanter available), then slowly sipped with friends over olives, cheese and crackers for the next two hours. Fine wine obviously, but still needs at least a couple more years to integrate. Beautiful deep garnet color. Nose and palate were both a bit reticent; not surprisingly, Night Two revealed much more of its character. Wonderful boysenberry and plum nose. Some wonderful vegetal notes on the palate (brought out by the touch of Cab Franc?). Medium finish (even on Night Two). Hold for 3-7 more years. (5430 views)

I am definitely tossing a 94 pointer on this one. I had the pleasure of sampling this at an Antinori tasting at my local wine shop last Wednesday along with the 2009 vintage. The 09 was too young to evaluate but the 05 was perfect and they were blowing out the last 11 bottles had in inventory so I grabbed two.
Opened but not decanted at 3pm and served at 6pm as we made a bouillobase with mussels, shrimp and oysters over linguini and of course lots of garlic! This wine rocked! Color showed no signs of age and the nose was pure Tuscan delight, leather, forest floor, red fruit, etc. Paired perfectly with the dinner and got even better after the dishes were washed and we savored the last glass. 2005 Antinori Tignanello was a perfect super tuscan to take to a great Italian restaurant. Beautiful dark purple, mild fruit, tobacco flavor. It has aged perfectly. I'm wondering if the 1.5 hour decant was not enough or is this wine in a dumb phase. Color is deep garnet to the rim with just a very slight hint of brick as you get to the rim. Legs are strong and supple lingering down the side of the glass. Nose seems of black fruit, rasberries, strawberries, chocolate, leather, beef, blood, white pepper, menthol. 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon e 5% Cabernet Franc and very expressive of the Sangiovese but the Cabernet Sauvignon falls to the Cabernet Franc. Mid palate of deep dark chocolate, black and red fruit, silky tannins and bright acidity and spice on both the tip of the tongue and on the finish with a lingering herbal after taste. This wine is evolving nicely after several hours. I would continue my previous openings at 4 or more hours before drinking as in my previous note. (9776 views)

- Crimsom color and aromas of licorice anise. It's balanced and has flavours of cherry, licorice anise and vanilla with a medium/full body. Smooth texture with a long finish - This will sound funny perhaps but on the nose, straight from a 30 min (only, I know) decant this smelt of a aniseed. To this novice super-T drinker, this felt a lot like Bordeaux. Huge and concentrated, very friendly, definitely modern but dryer and steelyer than most new world stuff. I liked it a lot. This wine has a dark ruby red color to it, medium bodied and 13.5% alcohol. It gives off aromas of ripe cherries, leather, cocoa powder and pencil shavings. It tastes of cherries, cocoa, leather and a little earth. It is not ready yet, give it 5 more years in the cellar and it should be drinking really good. I immediately pick up on really rich floral tones on the nose. There is also a cherry component, but also something that reminds me of fresh sliced tomatoes. There is a definite terroir to this wine and I feel like I’m in Tuscany as I’m sniffing it. There are brown sugar and cranberry notes with coffee beans and stone mingling flawlessly together to create a really unique, complex nose. The palate opens on ripe dark fruit, dark stone, and a mix of pepper and clove. The fruit is supple and intense at the same time, and I pick up on subtle herbal notes, caramel, and white chocolate tones throughout the mid palate. The finish is long and elegant with very soft pomegranate and brown butter tones running strongly through it. This is an awesome wine, very nice balance of ripeness and supple tannin. It’s very smooth, rich, and comes across as being very well made. Even though at just shy of $100, this wine is nowhere near low priced, I would say that it is an excellent special occasion wine worth buying.

The 2005 Tignanello is not terribly dissimilar to the 2004 in style, although it is unquestionably a smaller-scaled wine. The signature Tignanello elegance is there, the only question is whether there is enough sheer density to stand up to the wine’s structural components. Seems to be popular with some forum regulars recently so time to join the fun...

Splash decant, quite a purple tinge here but very bright. The initial hit on the nose made my night - Milano salami! Throw in some charcoal bar-b-q'd chicken in there and you have a truly original nose. Some olive oil and herby scrub as well. Savoury, spicy and appetising. Young and tight attack but plenty of concentration in here and ripe plum, cherries and clove. Quite a big whack of oak (seem to see a lot of this from the 2005 Tuscans. Maybe covering some cracks from the less than perfect vintage?). Give it 3 it 4 years and you'll be rewarded but I just love that trashy street-party nose right now. 91+

EDIT : +24 hours in decanter. Nose is much less fun now, full of bright cherries but the riotous carnival of yesterday seems to be over and the hangover is ensuing... Fruit showing the first signs of drying out on the palate, but still good. Strong grippy tannins back-end, and noticeably more sangiovese (and oak!) in character now. In fact the cab seems to have absconded overnight. Decant for 30 mins or so then drink it over the course of an evening. (10464 views)

Already very good, will however clearly improve with more aging and anticipate concomitant improvement in ratings score of at least 1-2 points. Years of cellaring potential left. Enjoyed recently with good CT wine buddy neighborbill and spouses as part of a pasta cook-off challenge recently held at our house. Big wine, very dark, big mouth feel, starting to balance out but still quite tannic, long lingering pleasant aftertaste. Huge nose of oak, blueberry and cassis, primary flavors included oak, terroir, allspice, black pepper and development of cigar box and tar later on the palate. Too expensive to be a reasonable QPR, still highly recommend this wine. Will hold off on last bottle for at least a couple of years. (9637 views)

Opened about 1/2 hour before consuming. No decanting. The nose was filled with blueberry and rasberry scent. Wine took about 1 hour to really open up. While the wine was young of course, it offers a pleasurable experience. An easy drinker if you know what I mean. the mid palate was consistent and even for a young wine was somewhat integrated. Time will improve this wine, but it is rather enjoyable at this young stage, but built to last many years for sure. Medum and satisfying finish, not terribly long. My wife and sister in law loved this wine and paired it with a baked salmon dish. Perfect compliment to my pasta dinner. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (9960 views)

Chianti (Waterford Wine Co., Milwaukee): Thoughts of corn sweetness coming off the nose. at first i'm not really able to get passed this. a leaner body, but substantial oak off the nose. decidedly blacker off the nose. quite the structure. Medium to Medium+ body. more darkly fruited. ben calls blue fruit. orange rind and blackcurrant. florals really aren't even an afterthought.
5 hours in...that corn sweet is showing as an amalgam of honey, peanut, chocolate. Introducing more mineral depth to the nose. Green turned to mineral. Attempting to show damp earthiness. that is also part of the corn sweet. Yes vs. Cepparello, bigger, softer, and more supple tannin. Full minus body with textural grit. This has really opened wildly. Tasted July 14, 2009 off a restaurant wine list.

Opened and decanted. Followed over about 90 minutes. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. The nose on this wine is all that and a bag of chips. Nose of saddle soap, rose petals and black berries; very floral in nature. This youthful wine is still a little tight on the palate giving way to flavors of black berries, black cherries and a dash of currants. Bright acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Continue to hold for at least another year or two before trying again. (9228 views)

For all the hype about this wine, I thought it was just ok. Certainly not worth the $110 price tag.

Nose: candied strawberry fruit, bit of leafy forest floor, briar, pine resin. Slightly hot. Palate: strawberry and cherry fruit, slight savory leather character, silky w/ decent grip, medium + acidity.

Definitely needs much more time in bottle. Hopefully it will develop into something more elegant. (8943 views)

Off the list at Al Veluu in Lake Como. Deep, almost black in color with a pretty nose of crushed berries, sweet tobacco and spice. Full bodied with juicy dark fruits on the palate with nice balance and a longish finish. Accessible now, but should improve with med-term cellaring. (8881 views)

Deep, thick, blackberry red color. Spice, pepper, toasted oak, cherry and plum scent. Full body, currant and earth taste with plenty of structure and full, dusty tannins. Lay it down for 7 years. (8242 views)

Just opened and shows barrel and cabernet concentrate on the nose. I am sure it will ease into greater things. The palate has building concentration. You can sense the cabernet is in there but its not as pronouced as I have felt in past vintages. My understanding is that this vintage also has a bit of cab. franc which may be the some what green notes on the nose. We will see where it goes.

2 hours in it has eased into itself more. Showing its sangiovese, but the franc (or at least herby notes) remain. In a nice wine. Barrel still drives on the palate. Hopefully time will smooth that into the body because it is a touch overdone right now. Really quite lovely. Time is only going to make it better. (8026 views)

Pondered purchasing this wine at home so I splurged on our Med cruise and purchased at dinner. Pop and pour I thought would not prove well but the wine was extremely balanced and velvety immediately out of the bottle and even better the second night at dinner. Fruit forward with some oak and black cherries , soft tannins and little if any spice. Great wine. Decided to purchase 5 bottles when I returned home. Decanted for five hours. Cedar, black currant, and mocha dust on the nose. Very clean and pure with flavors of fresh cherries, black licorice, and a little spice. Balanced and structured, this is revving up to be a great wine in a few years, but now still a baby. Really enjoyed. (8068 views)

Pop and pour at a local restaurant. This should have been decanted and allowed to breath for several hours. Big, brawny tannins, a little heat, and rich black fruit. Plenty of structure for sure, and I have no doubt the material here will make for an outstanding experience between 2015 and 2025. (8128 views)

had after 05 Phelps and this was a nice changeup. Great nose of smoke spice and some plums. Heartier wine and went great with my filet. raspberry with some oak in the mouth and a seemless well integrated finish. Enjoyed this thoroughly. (8347 views)

Absolutely fantastic! Had it in an italian resteurant. The wine was not decanted at all, and even though it is so young it was amazing. Incredible balance already. I can only imagine how good it's going to be in a few years. Will definitely buy a few bottles to cellar. (8026 views)

Italy 2008 (Italy): WIML92-93

Tasted at Tenuta Tignanello from 375ml. Dark purple to crimson color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of espresso, smoke, black currants, black cherries, black berries and some tobacco notes. Rich flavors of berries, cherries, raspberries and currants. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full body. Drink now with some decant time or continue to hold. (9031 views)

Tasted at Badia a Passignano. Dark purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose starts with a hint of cedar followed by notes of potpourri, talc, sandlewood and mixed fruits. Flavors are rich and full on the palate with notes of currants, Bing cherries and a hint of jam on the long finish. Bright acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Hold for at least a couple of more years before opening. (8951 views)
