High end Champagne 2012 vs 2013, tasted blind (Bad Ragaz): 7.5g dosage. Light yellow. Rich, ripe, generous, good acidity, yellow fruit and white flowers. Generous dosage. Intense, pine apple. Good but not among the best, I liked the Bereche/Egly flight better.

Merchant walkabout tasting of the 2021 burgundy vintage in bottle. I really liked this vintage, the wines were showing well. It is lighter and crisper than the 2020, more open at this stage and easier to drink, but there is no under-ripeness. Comparing it to recent vintages, I see it as a slightly cooler version of 2017. TN: From this producer the 2020 was showed. After the purchase by the Screaming Eagle owner, the price has gone up a lot, too much for what I think it is. Good for sure today but not grand. Elegant, with citrus notes and some residual CO2. May be it is just too young. 93-94

30 years of wine collecting and tasting, but this was a novelty. Believe it or not, there was a wasp in this bottle. Here is the story: This is one of my favorite Bordeaux and I have plenty of 2000 Pape-Clement in my cellar, so I know exactly how it tastes. I opened this bottle and it as strangely tannic, earthy with compressed aromas. Hmm, I thought, but since there are bottle variations with older wines, I decided to decant it. Once I finished decanting I saw a big piece of "cork" swimming on top of the decanter. After I poured that piece of "cork" into a glass to remove it, I noticed that it was a wasp, not cork. Wow, what a freak accident. I will keep the wasp to tell the story and next time I visit the Chateau. :-)

Together with the 2010 my favorite bottle. The precision here is unreal, especially since the producer is known for a more generous/oaky style. I preferred this to the 2015 which was quite a bit more plush. I think if you are a Burgundy drinker, then 2016 is your Bordeaux vintage. So elegant, so delineated. Cant wait to drink this 2032 onwards.

Tasting Note 9 of #50in2024

I bought this CDP on auction given reputation of producer and for the vintage as a good year.

Nice looking bottle, looks very "French" - whatever that means. The wine pours as deep red/purple and glass swirls leave medium length legs on the glass -- says 14% alcohol. Looks very inviting in the glass

The nose is undeniable. It has big aroma and presents complex to me.
To me it seems like mixed red and black fruits but has more complexity than that. I want to say some baking spice and/or pepper. Maybe like spiced cherries is the way to describe it best. Definitely a welcome sense of earthiness too. Hard to decipher as it is really multi-dimensional as would hope for in a CDP blend of 13 varietals.

Medium acid on the tongue from the initial sip, tannins are relatively high with sustained dryness and lingering on the tongue. The tasting profile is equally complex as the nose. The taste supports the nose, some deep red fruit but quickly resolves to more herbal and earthy tones. I read one review that said bay leaf which I think is directionally correct. The dryness of the wine takes over quickly. The after taste is driven by a return of fruit briefly and then just lingers enjoyably. I sense a little heat (alcohol) which leads me to either aging this a bit more or decanting longer it before tasting.

This is one of best CDP I have had, admittedly many more to taste, but I think this is a solid representation of the signature appellation in the southern rhone valley that is CDP.

Lastly, I tasted this side by side with a northern rhone Cote-Rotie and the distinct difference of the Syrah in the Cote-Rotie vs the Grenache led CDP was certainly apparent.

Oh this would be wonderful with a nice meat, starch and vegetable dinner. I will taste in that context next time.

Quick Notes Series
I must confess the above combination is really one that I could not enjoy, first I've never had a decent bottle of Eugenie, while I remained puzzled why Rene Engel wines were so delicious and Eugenie wines are so pale, it is even worse when it comes to Les Brulees. I've read over and over again that Brulees is considered one of the top 1er Crus but in reality I've never really had a good bottle. Therefore a combination between Brulees and Eugenie seems a little disastrous. The wine was quite inky and not so balanced. I cannot say I enjoyed this too much. Maybe this will taste marginally better in a couple of years but I don't really have high hopes on this.

  • Comment posted by Collector1855:

3/12/2024 1:43:00 PM - I gave the 2008 97pt. This 2013 is also likely to go up. As a rule of thumb, I would not drink high quality vintage Champagne before at least 15 years after the harvest. So the 2013 should hit its prime towards 2030.

Domaine visit. It was interesting to taste this wine as we just had the Mouton 2015 at the Domaine a few hours ago. Both wines are a great success. Both are at the same quality level, the Latour was more masculine, precise, with cool blue fruit, the Mouton more exuberant. The tannins are really polished for a young Latour. One can see the progress here. I have visited this estate several times and on each visit I am impressed about the attention to detail and the professionalism. Also, one has to congratulate Latour to release wines only after ca 10 years and shoulder the capital cost. That will help consumers, especially restaurants, to have more mature wines on their list and be able to offer a better customer experience.

  • Comment posted by Collector1855:

3/12/2024 12:37:00 AM - Yes, that is right. Chateau Latour is doing what all well known Grand Cru Chateau actually should be doing as they are all very cash rich: Release their "Grand Vin" after ca 8-10 years because before that, it is an unfinished product and barely drinkable. In my view it actually hirts the brand if you shell out 500$+ and the wine is not great. Chateau Latour had the vision to move to a late release regime. Champagne has been doing it as well with great success, Rayas, Vega Sicilia, etc. are doing it as well. But it takes strategic vision and courage and if you optimize for short term cash than it is very difficult to move from the unsuitable "give me money quickly" en Primeur system to a release when the wines are ready. Latour does not have a fix schedule, though the release windows have been in the 7-10 year range. I heard from Frederic Engerer that they are considering to release the 2017 before the 2016 for example because the great 2016 vintage needs more time. BTW, if you like Latour, try to find a well aged Chateau Montrose or Leoville Las Cases from 1989, 1990 or 1996. In my view it is a wine that is aromatically and structurally closest to Chateau Latour at a lower price point.

  • Comment posted by Collector1855:

3/12/2024 1:40:00 PM - Yes, Latour is really like those two wines. Masculine, tannic. More Dunn than Phelps in Napa terms. Lafite is more elegant. May be try vintage 2003 in your case.

Luckily the evening was rescued by 2 Magnums of Zyme Amarone Classico 2008 which I brought to the table. After they were gone, no one wanted to return to this wine, LOL!

2/18/2024 7:48:00 AM - The point here is that both wines are actually in the inexpensive category. You can always save a night with Lafite, DRC, Ferrari or Hèrmes. The issue at hand here is not price or quality but the so called "commercial wines" avoid of aroma and character. Made in an industrialized way, smells like grape juice with alcohol. That is the real pity, too many of these wines. Why would you drink that at 800 kcal/liter, twice as much as Coke. It is not only an issue at the very bottom with Jacobs Creek and Yellow tail but goes all the way up to the infamous Bolgheri blends.
