  • 2021 Klein Constantia Estate Red Blend

Decanted for an hour. Deep ruby in the glass. The Cab Sauv aromas dominate here quite a bit with notes of blackberry, blueberry, plum, capsicum. Full-bodied with ripe tannins and medium (+) acidity. Solid balance of all the elements, but not much depth. Drink right now or keep 5-6 years. Textbook SA Bordeaux blend:

  • 2008 Château Duhart-Milon

A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot. Raspberry, leather, earthy funk, and a bit of closet dust make for a Duhart-Milon that seems a bit older than its vintage would indicate. The initial pull was a bit balled up, but it relaxed after an hour or so. I experienced a push-pull of expansion here, with the tertiary flavors seemingly clamping down on the fruit, but then scurrying away to allow some interesting fresh black cherry notes to poke through. Ripe tannins. Moderate finish. At its prime, a pleasurable Bordeaux classic.

  • 2017 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

Tasted side by side with a 11-year older Left Bank Bordeaux, which might come off as an unfair comparison, but nonetheless, both wines show immense quality in the stages they’re in. Deep ruby in the glass. Aromas of sweet spice, thyme, rosemary, capsicum, blackcurrant, blackberry. Full-bodied, high acidity, high alcohol, high tannins. All blasting on full volume. Long finish. Young, but great aging potential. Hold this for 10-15 years. Great expression of the purity Napa Valley can deliver.

7/29/2018 9:22:00 PM - Thank you, grapenomad, my Drouhin 2015 note was for their Chablis 1er as I wrote, so I made that correction.
