  • Although not a vintage wine, given this bottling is for the 300th anniversary of the BoE in 1994, it must be around a quarter of a century old. I was intrigued, plus I used to enjoy NV Carte d'Or, so it was worth the modest price - and it's hard to source aged NV champagne, with the exception of the likes of 'extra age' cuvées.

Slightly worrying, the neck of the cork was very short, and obviously shrunken at this age, but there was a loud hiss on removal and it's fully sparkling in the glass. Rich old gold colour. Intense, opulent aroma with vanilla, apple, pear, and pastry; also a touch of syrup. Vibrant taste, good acidity, quite rich fruit verging on orange. Not a show stopper, but a very nice and well preserved bottle of mature champagne, which is always a great pleasure.

Bottle number 08250. [Cork + cage; 12% abv; Vintage Wine Gifts, £69.97].
