  • Mornington & Yarra Valley Trip Jan 2018; 3/31/2021-4/2/2021: (Bordeaux blend) - blackberry, red fuits, lifted red florals, great ripe tannin. Amazing nose. Beaut flow.

  • A blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from a vineyard planted in 1997 in Yarra Glen. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in open-top fermenters. Aged for 17 months in oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 13% alcohol, 5,8 g/l acidity and pH 3,6. Total production 2500 bottles.

Dark, moderately translucent deep ruby with a wide, clear rim. Ripe and somewhat restrained nose with aromas of fresh red fruits, some perfumed floral tones, a little bit of rowanberry marmalade, light savory wood tones and a hint of juicy blackcurrant. Overall quite an attractive and pleasantly fruit-driven nose. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and somewhat restrained on the palate with fine-tuned flavors of ripe raspberries, some sweet plummy fruit, a little bit of tobacco, light licorice tones, a hint of savory oak spice and a touch of crunchy chokeberry. The overall feel is silky smooth and very suave with balanced, moderately high acidity and ripe, textural medium tannins. The finish is dry, fresh and clean with long flavors of juicy blackcurrants, some tart red plums, a little bit of crunchy redcurrants, light sappy notes of herbal bitterness, a hint of licorice and a touch of toasty oak spice.

A balanced and harmonious Bordeaux blend with very smooth and suave overall character. The emphasis isn't here on the noticeable ripeness or overdone oak, but neither is the wine particularly delicate or structure-driven either. Although the wine is quite pleasant and enjoyably complex, I find it hard to place it anywhere; if it is supposed to be so impressive - and pricey - why it really doesn't feel like an impressive wine? I'm happy it isn't an overdone blockbuster with excessive ripeness and oak, but at least it could've shown some sense of structure. The acidity feels somewhat adequate and probably could offer some aging potential to the wine, but the tannins really don't bring any sense of structure or firmness to the wine, making the mouthfeel feel somewhat lopsided - not particularly flabby, but definitely lacking that something a nice tannic grip could bring. A nice wine, but nothing to get me truly excited. Feels a bit pricey for the style at approx. 40€.

  • Light to medium bodied. High pitched acid line that lifts the finish. Juicy and delicious. Crisp texture. But I can't help feeling there's something missing for the price. At $60+ I want more than this. The tannins don't coat the mouth and it doesn't offer the cigar box I'd normally expect. It's unique and I'm not sure where it will go over time, but I fancy it's a touch too simple and 'lunch time claret style' for this sort of money.
