  • Slightly sweet, honey suckle. Some acidity to balance the sweetness, but could have more, it's slightly unbalanced. Good Riesling but not the best I've had.

  • Classic Mosel aroma of flinty smokiness, white blossoms, ginger and a touch of gasoline. Flavours of lemon zest, ripe peaches, golden kiwi, apricot, marmalade and honey. Sweet and intense with lively freshness.

  • AP 05 16. Quick administrative note for other readers who are confused by the multitude of Thanisch bottlings and have had issues tracking them down. The Wwe H. Thanisch estate (named after Hugo Thanisch's Widow who took over estate operations after his untimely death around the turn of the 20th century) was split between family members in 1986, resulting in the current Wwe Dr. H. Thanisch estate (Erben Thanisch, currently run by Sofia Thanisch) and the Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Muller-Burggraef). Making matters more complicated, both resulting estates retained portions of the same vineyards and have fairly similar labels. Although both producers are laudable, I prefer the Sofia Thanisch bottlings, which seem to have a bit more life and an old-school refinement.

But on to the wine - I've usually shied away from Thanisch offerings because of their eye watering price (I paid $57 for this Spatlese, almost twice what Prum or Haag charges). But this year is a good pairing for the producer. The high ripeness of the vintage combined with the producer's old-school approach against Pradikat creep have resulted in a truly beautiful wine. Rocky underpinnings and beautifully nuanced fruit have resulted in a wine that is both versatile with food as well as enjoyed on its own for its every detail. Spicy and acidic, this could easily have been another producer's Spatlese from a cooler vintage, but with the complexity of a 2015.

Gorgeous, but pricy. Enjoy one now and bury a few for years to come. 93-95p (for potential)
