Deep mix of garnet and ruby red. Quite savory on the nose with barnyard, strawberries, rhubarb and a touch of herbs. Medium minus body with medium minus tannins (5/10). Layered palate with red berries, raspberries, hint of cocoa and herbs. Long finish. Drink till 2028.

Dang. I meant to pull the California (of which I have 2) and instead grabbed this (of which I now have zero). A happy accident, I suppose, for while I don't know whether the California Carignane is the better wine or not, this one is smokin'. Today is release day for roughly half of the 2019 Sandlands wines, so I thought it fitting to celebrate with one from the first release that I purchased, some five years ago. I can probably count the single-varietal Carignane's I've had in my life on one hand, and most of those have probably been rosés. So take that as my baseline. I know very little about what they're supposed to taste like, but this tastes spectacular. It has a wonderful, smokey, almost graphite nose, stinky (in a good way) with tar, beef blood and minerals. Chewy, but not tannic, dense yet lively, black fruited but finishing with red currant crispness. This is drinking very well right now, and I'm glad I ordered the one Carignane I was allocated this release (and fingers crossed on my wishlist request).
Dusty country road on the nose. Red fruited, medium juicy acid, gentle tannin, creamy medium body. Not overly sweet, but this is like a raspberry creamsicle. There's a bit of an aspartame, floral lift on the finish which makes me think there was stem inclusion. So easy to drink.

Cork broke apart. Fruit was gone. Very sad.
