First bottle, first impressions: surprisingly friendly even without a decant, glorious nose of dark soil, basalt, fresh thyme and mint, and some sweet notes of cherry reduction. Cool climate profile with something leafy like chard, yet not austere with plenty of body and good fruit, maybe since the tannins are friendlier than the other vin garde vintages of Magdelaine I know best. Its dark, almost smoky profile is a surprise in a "light" vintage. The balance is exceptional. Tightens up a bit after some air time, so I expect this will improve for another decade or more, but delicious already. Completely true to the house style, a quintessential Magdelaine.

Very nice! A lot of structure still on this one and a long life ahead. Red and black berries, tobacco leaf, dry earth and a cool root/herbal note that gives it a lot of freshness (licorice maybe?). Balanced without lacking in fruit concentration and a nice complex finish. There’s a lot to like on the 2011.

Double decanted for sediment then poured into Grassl 1855s. Served around cellar temp and consumed over 3 hours or so.
There's still some tannic bite here, but this bottle was aromatically open from the get-go. Notes of currant and plum came streaming out of the bottle as soon as the cork was pulled. Slightly brambly on the palate. This could probably use a bit more time to smooth out the tannin, but this was a lovely bottle of wine.

Tasted over 2 hrs -dark red violet -cassis jam bursts out upon first opening then fades with air and gains earthiness and some perceptible oak -med acidity, med/med- weight bright focused cassis intermingled with some earthy rusticity finishing with med/med+ tannins and a fair amount of oak -this is pretty in an old school style and probably better in 5-10 years when the oak and tannins integrate some more, knew this would be just a baby but wanted to dive in for the first taste of this producer in their last vintage produced
