On first opening there's everything you'd ever want from a Saint-Joseph: smoke, meat, lifted floral notes, great grip and persistence, just magnificent. With air, though, the wine clams up significantly, showing mostly gritty/chalky tannins that struggle for contention with the wine's deep core of red-black fruit. This is about to go into its shell for a few years, but the wait is absolutely going to be worth it.
