Friday, November 20, 2020 - Decanted for 3 hours. Even ruby. Fragrant menthol and cherry. Perfectly poised, medium weight. Tobacco, brown spice, red fruit, and earth with fine grained tannins to finish. Another wonderful young bottle of this, and it hasn't shut down yet despite the tannins that are chewy and persistent. I love the bit of austerity and bitterness on the finish. This will continue to be my go to "house Nebbiolo" until it convinces me that it needs to sleep for a while...or the 2017 appears in the market and spares my remaining bottles from the fate of being drunk much too early.

11/21/2020 3:00:00 AM - Thanks for your note. And I share your feeling - the Produttori got everything right in 2016 and it is hard to keep ones hands off the bottles. Another terrific yet affordable option is Trediberri Barolo 2016, equally beautiful at this early stage. I am switching between the two, so some of my bottles may have a chance to survive their early fruit phase ;)

11/21/2020 7:35:00 AM - PSPatrick-Thank you for the tip about the Trediberri, which I have not tried yet. My impression is that with the nature and balance of this vintage, a good number of the entry level Barolos will provide unusual early drinking pleasure. I am trying as many as I can during this early open phase fully realizing the complexity that I'll be missing down the road by committing "vinfanticide". However, I am not at a point in life when I can safely assume that I will have the opportunity to drink these when they are fully mature, so it is a great treat to enjoy them now.

11/21/2020 11:53:00 PM - Makes perfect sense, in particular since palates change over seasons and sometimes it just has to be some youthful fruit. And it would be difficult to not be intrigued by the young 2016 Nebbiolos.

Of the seven 2016 Nebbiolos I have tried so far, next to the Produttori del Barbaresco and the Trediberri the Luigi Vico Barolo Serralunga D'Alba was a true stand out young that should also age for decades.

The Luigi Pira Langhe Nebbiolo and the Fratelli Alessandria Langhe Nebbiolo Prinsiòt were lovely, also suitable for earlier drinking, and great value for money. The dense and concentrated Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo drank more like a true baby Barolo and needs time.

Only the Damilano Langhe Nebbiolo Marghe seemed fairly straightforward.

I whish I had already tried more 2016s, but after I drank quite a large number of Nebbiolos over summer I am currently back to longing for Pinot Noir and Rioja. Are there any other young 2016 Nebbiolos you have been particularly fond of I should try?

12/2/2020 11:56:00 AM - @drwine: I have only had 2013 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Gramolere and 2016 Fratelli Alessandria Langhe Nebbiolo Prinsiòt so far and was impressed by both. Will seek to try more. Thank you!
