Saturday, September 26, 2020 - second bottle that i have opened. yes, it is a beautiful normale! opens with a whiff of rose and cherry. on the palate, the wine is typical of the vintage with good acidity and rounded ripe tannins giving the wine a good structure for aging. the fruit is there in abundance (mostly cherry, raspberry and strawberry) and i get a sense that they timed the ripeness of the grapes just perfectly. i.e. they hit the nail on the head with the phenolic ripeness and the sugar ripeness. As i drink this second bottle, I am guessing that they hit the maceration duration perfectly as the wine shows just enough extraction as to not mask the varietal characteristics. At the same time the wine is delicious, primary, and shows wonderful length. It will age beautifully over the next 20 years or so and i look forward to trying it again in 10 years to see how the secondary aromatics and flavor profiles develop. it's a beautiful vintage and this is the best produttori normale that i have ever tasted. their single vineyard bottlings should be off the charts as the grapes that go into the normale are usually from the youngest vines. if the younger vines are producing grapes this good, imagine what the older vines will show! I paired this wine with some good soppressata. remember, nebbiolo loves to be paired with a good protein.

    5/8/2021 11:46:00 AM - hi there,

first, let me say that the wine will taste much better and will be much more enjoyable when paired with proteins/fats. I recommend any braised beef or lamb. an appetizer plate of a good salami, prosciutto, and some nice cheeses ( not blue cheeses) also make for a good accompaniment. the tannins in the wine need the proteins, and the acid in the wne needs the fat. i was recently tasting 5 baroli without food and they were very tannic and acidic. the host brought out a braised leg of lamb and the difference was magical. the wines popped and the tannins and acids in the nebbiolo suddenly took a back seat to the fruit and other nuances in the wine. enjoy!
