Sunday, August 23, 2020 - I purchased this in search for the holy grail 'bargain' red and perhaps I don't appreciate Nebbiolo enough but to me this one had too much heat and a present syrup-y taste. The wine seemed to lack integration and had plenty of dry and earthy, clay notes but lacking in the floral or fruit tones.

8/24/2020 9:08:00 AM - From the description, this sounds like a flawed wine and lack of experience with Nebbiolo shouldn’t account for that. This particular wine is crisp, clean, acidic, tannic all around a core of bright red fruit. The consistency is not syrupy at all but, rather, medium-minus. While it’s definitely a dry (way more dry than, say, California PN,) and earthy wine there is plenty of fruit. Again, though, if your broadest experience is with California PN you may well think Nebbiolo is lacking in fruit because of the prominence of acid and tannin which can definitely overwhelm the fruit if you’re not used to it. So I think tastes and experience can account for most of what you note, but not the syrupy texture. I would encourage you to try again and to also try another Barbaresco, maybe a little older. There are numerous 2013s around that are quite good - in fact, the 2013 Produttori del Barbaresco (the normale) is excellent.

8/24/2020 9:38:00 AM - Thank you for the tasting note. Honesty is always welcome. Sangiovese is not generally my type of grape but it doen’t stop me looking and what I have leant from my Italian “education” is I prefer less acid than many but not over ripe. With some grapes a difficult combination.

8/24/2020 11:28:00 AM - This is a wine that won’t be at peak (at least for many, perhaps most, palates) until 2025ish. If I were you, I’d revisit in 5 yrs or so. Also, RE: a comment on your note, the fruit here is Nebbiolo, not Sangiovese (this is a Barbaresco, not a Brunello).
