90 Points

Friday, August 21, 2020 - Oh my bleh. This wine is good but no where near great. I bought half a case based on the reviews. Hopefully 5 years in the cellar will help but put me in the camp that does not think this is drinking above its price point by any means.
Nose is strong, slightly on on the sweet side. Red fruits galore. Palate is lean, tart and just plan a boring. I would serve this for dinner for non-wine geeks.

I was unimpressed as well but my experience with Produttori and what I've heard in interviews with Aldo, who runs the Produttori, I expect it will be great. My apologies if you have experience with this producer and still find this unimpressive, but if you do not I highly recommend giving this a significant amount of time before passing a final judgment.

8/21/2020 9:03:00 PM - Thanks sleepyhaus. I have not had much experience with Produttori with any age. Mostly via wine shop tastings and passed. I am optimistic that this release will benefit from 5+ years sitting still. I do think it has potential. That is the beauty of wine collecting. Chasing the most opportune time to open something.

Its a long haul and more so due to the vintage, but if can store ‘em well try 3 at markers 2025, 2030, and 2035 for a great experience, and follow others on CT along the years to see how it is developing...cheers

Points and no tasting note or comments are a complete waste of space. I’ve no experience of Produttori at all and like you purchased a case purely on reading CT notes and will really enjoy waiting and reading until i am curious enough to taste from about 2025 .

8/22/2020 8:59:00 AM - About the price point, what does this cost in the US (assuming you're there)?

8/22/2020 9:03:00 AM - In the uk GB it is currently £21 in bond so about £27 delivered

8/22/2020 10:41:00 AM - Thanks. So I've only ever bought this directly from Produttori and the 2015 and 2016 were €25 if I remember correctly, so the UK price is fair, I just wondered if people had been disappointed in this because it was more expensive in the US.

8/22/2020 10:43:00 AM - jonathan, as of this moment there are numerous U.S. sources in the $38-$39 range, with 1 outlier @ $36.

8/22/2020 10:54:00 AM - jordanj, my guess is that this BUT *needs* cellaring through '23, even a decanting on 2/15/20 not doing much to loosen it. :) [FYI, *should* you be interested, I've entered specific info for this vintage, including acclaim, which can be accessed via the CellarTracker Article link (lower lft)].

8/22/2020 12:13:00 PM - Creeping up in price here in US; 2014s & 2015s could be had for $30-$36 range...2016s have been in the $38-$44 range...US tariffs may be to blame if they were applied to this bottling.

8/22/2020 1:06:00 PM - Vinomazing, since tariffs AREN'T on Italian wines, do you mean some Italian wineries are raising their prices because foreign competitors are being forced up? At any rate, your putting a range for older vintages reminded me of the site where I had info for 1 ea of the '11 & '12 that I purchased @ COSTCO: $25.99 ea on 8/25/16!

8/22/2020 1:39:00 PM - Aha! Good to know SRH, was not sure of tariffs exactly, thanks for info. I wld prob rather not know which bottles paying those crappy taxes on so can sleep better lol.

Makes sense for the winery, and comparatively still a value Barbaresco, but Wow I do remember it in the $20s, and now in the $40s within 4-5 vintages!! And the 2015 riservas were hitting $75 some places, when they were $55 for 2013s & 2014s.

Remember when gasoline and cigarettes were under $1?!

8/23/2020 2:34:00 AM - In Australia, these 2016s can be found for USD50 at best, though typically more like USD60. While that’s still good value against other Barbaresco, there are a lot of very good local wines that can be bought for that price. From that perspective, I agree with some of the other TNs that have questioned the VFM in recent times.

8/24/2020 1:04:00 AM - Half the pleasure for me is to still find wine at an everyday price that gives me pleasure and i don’t mind having it in good storage. Use to have a cellar now just 3 liebherr wine fridges, which are excellent. I enjoy keeping my inventory, sort of, up to date, doing research and anticipating.

8/24/2020 8:52:00 PM - Yes $50-60 is quite high, probably would also pass on if they were that much here. Curious why so much in Aus?

  • Comment posted by mphatic:

8/24/2020 9:43:00 PM - Taxes, typically. Most imported wine is expensive. If I were to travel into the country with more wine than my duty free limit, I would be hit with more than 45% in taxes.

8/24/2020 10:23:00 PM - At this price level taxes in uk are about 30%,
