Sunday, June 21, 2020 - Thanisch wins the 1999 Trifecta. In this not great vintage, their three first Gold Capsule pradikat wines are stunning. The spatlese, the last one tasted, is in perfect drinking order now. With a hint of auslese sweetness, this Berncasteler Doctor shows its terroir perfectly. So much pure honeyed slate, deep minerality, just wave after wave of stones carried by honeysuckle, apricot and peach— none of them as luscious as in the auslese, but rather traveling that nice spatlese route down the middle of the tongue without getting too much into the flowers or tropical fruits. One could seek more complexity in a finer vintage, but that is besides the point here.
