Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2007 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Ruppertsberger Gaisböhl Riesling Germany, Pfalz
on the nose it's citrus, sulphur and a tiny touch of kerosene. in the mouth there is some phenolic grip, slight spice, apples and lemons - all ripe, mineral and slight sulphur that introduces a bitterness on the back palate. Still young despite that kerosene note. Hmm.
White
2010 Rippon Riesling Jeunesse New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Lake Wanaka
Muted nose that presents primarily lemon notes and is quite forward for it's age - already revealing a heady petrol note. In the mouth the wine has lemon over lime, some phenolic grip and a certain viscosity that adds to the mouth weight. The medium plus acidity is appropriate and it's a nicely balanced wine. Good.
White
2011 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett Germany, Nahe
On the nose there is an initial whiff of sulphur, then passion fruit, stone fruit - peach and some minerality - perhaps wet stone. there is a slight spritz in the mouth medium plus acid and flavour intensity with flavours of tropical and stone fruit and, though the wine is off-dry, it finishes long and dry with a slight sulphur intrusion at the end of the finish. Needs more time but is very, very good.

Aromas of lime over lemon, slight minerality. in the mouth there is medium plus acid and the lime flavours are fresh and ripe - the wine is off dry. Very fruity, slight phenolic grip. Very nice - defo in the eminently quaffable!

2009 W. Gisselbrecht Riesling Schiefferberg France, Alsace
Peach and apricot that is slightly cloying on the nose. in the mouth there is a lack of acidity for me. It does have, though, a fairly chunky phenolic grip, that adds to the mouth weight, with fruit notes of lime, apricot and peach. Simple and a bit flabby.

2012 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Passion fruit over citrus and stone fruit, slight sulphur notes on the nose. In the mouth there is a slight spritz, some phenolic grip and passion fruit and melon flavours that are both very slightly candied. it feels a bit flabby. not quite balanced. Meh.

Lime that is tending to an almost marmalade sweetness competes with kerosene. On the palate there is more lime and kerosene but the wine feels a bit dusty and dried out and it lacks a bit of acidity. comes over as tired. Nah.

2010 Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben-Thanisch) Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
medium minus intensity aromas of tropical fruit - pineapple (?), stony/slate minerality and sulphur. In the mouth the wine is fresh and fruity, it has a slight spritz and a touch of phenolic grip, is at the sweeter end of off dry and has flavours that offer a cornucopia of ripe fruit. Very nice.
Red
2008 Rolf Binder/Veritas "Bull's Blood" Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Jammy red and black fruit - plums and prunes - that is like boiled sweets with chocolate and vanilla oak and butter and cream on the nose. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acid (or is that the alcohol?) fine and smooth tannins, concentrated, jammy and, perhaps, slightly burnt black fruits - plums and prunes again - plain chocolate and coffee, medium plus length. Big, bolshy, brash and, it's own way, beautiful...

Closing

The Donnhoff was the clear winner (for me). The Clonakilla and the Rippon showed well from the New World.

The Rolf Binder got pulled out as, by the end of the night, everyone was a bit tired of Riesling!
