This week a rather nice NZ Sauvignon Blanc from the North Island rather than Marlborough.

In conjunction with a Super Typhoon (I believe what you would call a Category 4 hurricane) heading in our direction. Currently 60mph sustained winds here, and expected to increase significantly in the next 3-4 hours.

But we build stuff out of concrete not wood, so no great drama expected (albeit some low-lying areas may see a bit of flooding from the storm surge).

Good luck with the storm.

FFP here is an Oktoberfest Bier from Shiner Brewery in TX.

It's a wonderful day to be outside and grill. Sunny, low humidity and warm.

All good thanks - peaked at 80mph gusting to 110; 6-7 inches of rain in the last 24 hours, and that will keep going for a bit. We're on the 29th floor so the building swayed noticeably (hanging lamps swinging) from time to time.

Last week was probably my strangest FFP ever - an unknown Muscadine wine at about 10 am. Unknown because it was served blind at a Georgia Wine and Spirits Challenge that I was a judge at. I enjoy a muscadine grape straight off the vine, but lament that it is so common in wines in the Southeast US. That being said, I did get to taste the best in class one at the end of the competition, and it was nicely done and pleasing.

Today, a new concoction I will call a Nicaraguan Allegheny. (An Allegheny cocktail exists and uses a blackberry liqueur, but uses Bourbon and lemon juice (and no Maraschino) instead of my rum and lime.)

1 1/2 oz Flor de Caña Oro Reserva No. 4 Rum (hence the Nicaragua modifier)
3/4 oz Bartlett Maine Estate Winery Blackberry Liqueur
1/2 oz Carpano Antica Formula Sweet Vermouth
1/2 oz Carpano Dry Vermouth
1/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
1/4 oz Lime juice
4 drops 1821 Prohibition Aromatic Bitters

The blackberry liqueur and the barrel aged Antica Formula give this so much structure it's very vinous. The bitters may contribute to that as well.
We visited the Bartlett Maine Estate winery last summer. He makes some extraordinary stuff.

We had 3 beautiful whites at a seafood restaurant (Henrietta Red) with friends in Nashville last night. A 2010 Fevre Les Preuses, 2016 Baudouin Millet Vaudesir and a 2012 Huet Clos du Bourg.

Enjoyed a fantastic bottle of Marcoux 2006, just the regular bottling, not VV. It was a little harsh on opening Thursday, so we set it to the side on the counter mostly full, and then revisited it Friday. Wow, what a nice story after the time to breathe and unwind.

Medium red, with this raspberry liqueur thing going, overplayed by spicy aromas that fit the early autumn weather. I’ve had bottles of Marcoux where my first reaction was that this had to be what the Dune saga was about (“spice” plays a big role in Dune). Really long, with a tart, mineral-driven finish.

Really enjoyed this bottle… a shame it was my last from that vintage!

Kicked this weekend off with a palatable, albeit not very exciting, blanc de noirs from Mater & Filii, a producer not well known on CT it seems.

Seltzer water. Still battling lingering effects of food poisoning.

Bummer.

Been sipping on a bottle of Traminette (Gewurztraminer hybrid) from Fennville Winery in Michigan and had a glass of the Rasa Founder's Reserve 2018. Both solid wines.

2005 GPL. Opening with air. Another year or two in the cellar or a 1-2+ hour decant would help.

Having recently taken delivery of a mixed case of Italian whites, FFP this week is a rather crisp and pleasant 2022 Sartarelli Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico which is getting the juices flowing nicely.

Yesterday was a Tablas Creek 2019 Counoise - which was very nice. Recommended varietal to try if you get a chance.
