Invited friends over and drank some wine. No theme but we did eat Ropa Vieja.

• 2017 Fritz Haag Juffer Riesling Großes Gewächs

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  Beautiful lemon and green apple hide some richer orchard fruits and walk alongside other notes of honey and household oil. The mouth is so pleasing with powerful clean acidity surrounded by delicious fruits. This has such a beautiful and satisfying profile.

• 1974 Michele Mascarello & Figli Barolo Natale fu Maurizio

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  A beautiful and interesting wine. The color was garnet, very light but clean and fading around the edges. The nose was savory red fruits with flowers and herbs. On the palate, this wine is still well structured: silty tannins and brilliant acidity are very well integrated and provided a perfect structure to carry the spiced and savory fruits. Clean and surprising.

• 2018 Marcel Lapierre Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre

  France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

  Double decanted from magnum 4 hours before drinking.
  Complex mix of red fruits on the nose were consistent on the palate. At this point this wine is about aggressive fresh red fruits, acidity and silky tannins. This was a great drink with a fun rising profile and a long powerful finish. A powerful wine that will need some more time.

• 2019 Schloss Lieser Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Großes Gewächs

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  The nose is floral honey atop lemon, lime and tart orchard fruits. There were secondary notes of utility oil as well. The palate is similar to the nose and is carried for by a brisk and steady spine of ample acidity. The finish is long and clean. Simply delicious.

  Very nice nose of lemon, petrol products and green apple. A pleasant mouth with tingling acidity and fun fruits. Very good.

• 2010 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva Selección Especial

  Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

  Dark cherry, spices and coconut on the nose. Dark red fruits predominate the palate and are given considerable forward momentum by a good acidity. This acidity is well integrated with sandy round tannins thus containing the momentum within a defined structure. Finishes long and satisfying.

  Bitter toasted notes astride lemon and green apple. Great soft and generous bubbles and high acidity that provide momentum toward a clean and delicious finish. Excellent.

Rieslings were rocking; the beaujolais a bit young and the Barolo a pleasant surprise.
