  • 2009 Peter Jakob Kühn Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus Riesling Großes Gewächs 93 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

Tasted blind. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium+ - pronounced, developing and complex nose: Ripe apple, spices, pepper and salt, smoky, cassis, cinnamon. Intense, deep and dense. Fantastic!
On the palate dry, medium, mild acidity. 13% abv, that makes this wine a little bit hot. Medium body. Very salty and mineral, herbs, few ripe fruits, some apple, some bitterness. Lots of grip, very long, dense and deep. Beautiful wine, that will stay on this level for at least 5+ years. Great experience! 93-94

  • 2017 Weingut Schätzel Scheurebe Naturwein 90 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

Only around 400 bottles produced. All-natural wine making, no added Sulphur, long maceration. Clear, pale lemon-golden color. Fine Co2 mousseux that reminded me a bit of a Moscato d’Asti. Clean, but very freaky nose! All kinds of flavors of spontaneous fermentation. Wild and raw, but you can easily detect the classic Scheurebe aromas. Very interesting to me.
On the palate bone dry (less than 1gr residual sugar). Medium acidity. This wine only has 10,5% abv, but compensates that with enormous phenols and extract. Earthy notes, nice fruit, gooseberry, saltiness. Medium+/long, fine and elegant finish with all the exotic flavors of the Scheurebe lingering on the palate. Juicy, light but also with great substance. Serious wine, certainly not made for everyone and most certainly way too young. Next bottle in 2-3 years. 89-90+

  • 1997 Georg Breuer Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling 97 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

This bottle was perfectly stored at the winery. Popped and poured. Clear, medium golden color, still very youthful.
Clean, medium intense, developing nose with lots of herbs, ripe yellow fruit, some mint and lots of mineral notes. Very dense and nice, but not as expressive and complex as the PJK we had this night.
This wine needs time, air and big stemware! Amazing at this age. Dry, medium (+), ripe and well-integrated acidity. It is very dense and deep. Every component is tightly woven into the other. Lots of extract, great texture and grip. Perfectly balanced, great elegance and finesse. Aromas of ripe yellow fruit and granny smith apple, spiciness, herbs and lots of saltiness. Finish is very long, delicate and pure elegance! Gets better and better with air and time. This bottle is certainly at its peak, because I could not believe that it gets any better, but it would stay on this level for at least 5+ years. Great wine, great experience. 96-97

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2008 Philippe Bornard Savagnin Côtes du Jura Ouillé Les Chassagnes 91 Points

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Tasted blind. Made of 100% Savagnin. Clear, pale-medium golden color with a reddish hue. Clean, medium intense and quite youthful nose easily pointing to oxidative styles like Sherry fino or Vine Jaune. Ripe apple, some ginger, mineral notes.
Bone dry, medium+ acidity, quite high alcohol 14% that is very well integrated. On the palate good tension and pressure, ripe, mellow apple, oxidative notes of salted nuts. Medium+ length. Certainly, a good wine, but too exhausting and complicated for my personal taste. Might go very well with food though. Potential is hard to tell, but I guess this wine would survive another decade. 90-91

  • 1999 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Tasted blind. Clear, medium cherry red. Clean, medium intense and rather youthful, closed nose. Some animalistic notes, camphor/medicine, reductive, red fruit. Wild and raw. Needs air to open up.
Dry, medium+-high acidity, perfectly integrated. 13% abv. Medium+ fine and filigree tannin. On the palate earthy notes, menthol, red fruit, spices, blood and herbs. Rather cool, very fresh and young. Great tension and very young. I was very surprised that it was almost 20 years old. Medium+ finish. Has potential for at least another decade. 91-92

  • 2004 Mitchelton Shiraz Print 89 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria

Tasted blind. Clear, deep, purple-ruby color, almost inky. Clean, medium+ intense nose easily identified this wine as a new world Shiraz. Very youthful, lots of ripe, primary fruit (blackberry), herbs, some lactic notes. And: This wine really smelled FAT! Lots of butter and vanilla. I thought, if I drink a glass, I will consume 1000kcal … Never had this in an Aussie Shiraz before.
On the palate dry with lots of extract sweetness. Medium+ acidity balanced the 14,5% abv quite well. Full bodied, medium+/pronounced flavors with lots of dark fruit, spices, some mineral notes and BUTTER! I guess that’s how a vegan must feel, if he is forced to eat creamy Sauce bernaise… One glass fills me completely. Very concentrated and lots of extract. Astonishingly young. But will it get better (leaner) with time? I don’t know… 89-90

  • 1989 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Popped and pour. Perfect cork and fill level. Clear, medium golden-amber color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose that first reminded me a bit of Grünhaus: Smokiness, herbs, tangerine, cassis, vanilla, mineral notes. Complex and multi-layered. One of my favorite scents!
Off-dry, medium (+), perfectly integrated acidity. Only 8% abv. Medium body, which made it hard to tell, if this is a richer Kabinett, a Spätlese or even a lighter style Auslese. On the palate beautiful favors of tangerine, apricot, ripe yellow stone fruit, vanilla, herbs and a beautiful mineral core. Soft and delicate, but also with beautiful tension and grip, very delicious and with a super elegant, long and lingering finish. Beautiful Kabinett. This bottle could be kept for at least 5+ years. 93

  • 1989 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese 95 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Tasted blind. Popped and pour. Clear, medium golden color, very youthful. Clean, medium+ intense, developing and very beautiful nose with fine yellow stone fruit, herbs, slate, some petrol. Every scent interwoven, delicate and refined.
Medium-dry with a lively, medium+ acidity that is perfectly integrated. On the palate very aromatic and refined, elegant yellow fruit, herbs and slate. Great texture, perfect balance. A very light and fragrant Auslese. So joyful to drink with a very long, lingering and delicate finish. Still very young with potential for another decade. What a great pleasure to taste two Mosel wines from this great vintage at the same night! 94-95 AP#05
