Introduction

I had the Coravin and suggested to Ivan that we meandered through anything he had any concerns with.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1995 Drayton Shiraz Merlot Flawed

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Pokolbin

From Coravin. On the nose it's dusty and old with slight touches of vanilla and cherry but in the mouth it's well on its journey to vinegar...

  • 2000 Groot Constantia Pinotage

South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia

From Coravin. Muted with old black plums, leather, farmyard and dirty earth...in the mouth it's tart and leathery with tired drying tannins, spice and no fruit. Meh

  • 1990 Bleasdale Shiraz Special Vintage

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek

From Coravin. Aromas of leather, sweet spice, muted sweet black cherry, smells old but with sweet fruit. In the mouth it's juicy with muted black cherry, sweet & savoury spice, leather, tiny bit of front of mouth tannic grip. Hmm.

  • 1998 The Wine Society Cabernet Sauvignon Limited Release

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

From Coravin. Brambly, blackcurrant, spice, earth, leather...it's a bit sour on the palate with alcohol warmth. Fine textured by drying tannins, a lack of fruit but liquorice notes...Hmm...the nose implies that a bit of air might get some fruit out of it...not sure.

  • 2000 Nederburg Cabernet Sauvignon

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl

From Coravin. Funky farmyard, leather, slight petroleum, quite dirty and meaty on the nose. It's spicy and tannic on the palate but with a distinct lack of fruit. Meh.

  • 1991 Tulloch Shiraz Hector

  • 1988 Lindeman's Cabernet Sauvignon St. George

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

From Coravin. On the nose it's leathery with tilled earth, cream, sweet spice...with agitation it shows some blackcurrant. It's tart and tannic on the palate. Bit short. hmm. Again, I'm hoping that time in the decanter might get some fruit. But it's quite dried out.

  • 1997 Marienberg Shiraz Reserve

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

From Coravin. Muted cherry, peppery spice, slight off milk note, leather and meat. In the mouth it has cherry, slight rhubarb, mouth filling and surprisingly generous. Finishes long with peppery spice. Bit of a bonus.

  • 1998 Howcroft Estate Shiraz

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast

From Coravin. Biscuit, toast, alcohol heat, black fruit, charcuterie, leather. In the palate it shows coffee, liquorice, tannic grip on the mid palate, bit of breadth and body here. The fruit element isn't so present in the mouth but the components are well balanced. Okay.

  • 1998 Meerlust Rubicon

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

From Coravin. Aromas of dense brambles, saddle leather, baked earth, tart red and blackcurrant backed by plentiful spice. It's tart and ungenerous on the palate with drying tannins. Bugger.

Closing

More hits than misses here. Sad really. But the marienberg and howcroft estate were a pleasant surprise.
