Introduction

This was matt's apt warming. We watched some of the European Championships while drinking wine into the night.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2009 Paolo Bea Santa Chiara 92 Points

    Italy, Umbria

nose: very complex and interesting nose filled with tones of navel oranges, cardamon, cinnamon spices, spiced pears, and some oxidative tones.

taste: full bodied with medium/high acidity and actually some tannins. There is good depth beneath the structure along with tones of cardamon, navel oranges, cinnamon spices and some bits of wax.

overall: One of the more interesting wines I've come across. It's orange in the glass and very complex. It was tighter on the nose and had some real structure on the palate.

  • 2007 Weingut Keller Abts E®.de Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

nose: lush and fatter on the nose with tones of peaches, pears, apples and white fruits. There is a richness to the tones as well with good depth.

taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity. Very good depth with fat, yet streamlined tones of peaches, pears, red and green apples.

overall: This is a really good wine. On the richer side of things, it is a larger riesling that caught me a little off guard.

  • 2002 Launois Pere et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Special Club Blanc de Blancs 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

nose: fragrant nose of baked bread, brioche, red apples, meringue, and pear tones with a touch of minerals. What it has in complexity, it does slightly lack in depth.

taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. The structure is there, but it more provides a spine. Balanced, with tones of baked bread, brioche, red apples, pears and white fruits.

overall: This was drinking very well. Balanced with good depth on both the nose and palate. There is a nice freshness to it and the structure isn't too big right now.

  • 2010 Chester's Anvil Gretna Green 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: nice nose of star fruits, white fruits, some papaya and acacia flowers. Nice balance, but lacking some depth.

taste: medium/full bodied with low acidity. Balanced with good tones of star fruits, white fruits, citrus and some oak tones too.

overall: a very good wine, but lacking some depth on both the nose and palate. Was noticing a bit of oak as well, which detracted a bit for me.

  • 2004 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis

nose: straight forward chablis nose with tones of gunflint, lemon zest, white fruits, and citrus tones. Good complexity with the depth that one would expect from a village level wine.

taste: light bodied with good medium+ acidity that is more refreshing than being obtrusive. Balanced with decent depth and tones of gunflint, lemon zest, white fruits and some floral tones.

overall: This is drinking very well right now. A real nice village chablis that is mixing in maturity while still having some youthful tones to it.

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

nose: beautiful and aromatic nose filled with tones of fresh berries, all sorts of floral tones, spices, and loads of red fruits. Well layered with wonderful grand cru depth.

taste: beautiful and silky medium feel with medium/high acidity. Elegant and very lovely with great depth and gorgeous tones of fresh picked berries, loads of red fruits, spices and bits of roses on the finish.

overall: this was a wine that was open for 24 hours before I got to it. It showed off it's class real well and was a beautiful wine. Certainly in need of time, but it was very attractive right now with the amount of air it got.

taste: Lighter bodied with medium+ acidity that is both refreshing and noticeable. The acidity provides a nice spine along with nuanced tones of red florals, red fruits and fresh picked berries.

overall: this was really good. This was very much on the feminine side of things and played more towards elegance than raw power.

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

nose: beautiful and flowing nose filled with tones of dark spices, red cherries, poppies, wild flowers, berries and tobacco tones as well. Very deep with a more feminine style to it.

taste: very classy medium feel with medium/high acidity and good tannins. There is still some very good structure to this right now with feminine tones of red cherries, red florals, dark spices, tobacco and berries.

overall: this was an utterly beautiful wine. Still seemed very young, but very drinking right now. There is very good layering and a lot of class. I would love to try this again in about 3-5 years.

  • 2010 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph 91 Points

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

nose: a good dose of black pepper strikes right off the bat along with flowing tones of spices, black fruits, dark red fruits and some dark red cherries. Very good depth, though it did seem to be holding back a slight bit right now.

taste: full bodied with very good and chewy tannins. The tannins certainly show off the youth along with medium+ acidity. There is really good balance to this with tones of dark red cherries, black fruits, black pepper and spice tones.

overall: A beautiful young St. Joseph. My first Gonon, and I'm very impressed. I would love to see where this wine goes over the years.
