Introduction

Had some friends over to watch the football match, and opened up a nice selection of wines. Most showed very well.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2002 Launois Pere et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Special Club Blanc de Blancs 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Enjoyed this a lot. Very nice energy on the palate with crisp pear and apple tones. This wasn't a dense champagne so lovers of the yeasty, bready style may find this a bit thin, but for me I loved the more taut and fierce nature of it.

  • 2011 Clos Saron Tickled Pink 90 Points

    USA, California, Sierra Foothills

Really enjoyable light floral and strawberry tones mingle with a cool wet slate tone. This is a very nice rose that delivers great refreshing flavor, with cool mineral tones that make it a perfect sunny day wine.

  • 2009 Paolo Bea Santa Chiara 92 Points

    Italy, Umbria

Exotic nose of spices, orchard fruit, waxy florals and subtle oxidative tones. The palate is also exotic and has searing minerality, beautiful marine tones and floral notes. Continues to be my favorite orange wine.

  • 2004 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis

Fruit was plump and expressive with pear, gunflint and fresh apple. The minerality was moderate and provided a nice cooling effect with overall this was still a bit loose and lacked the precision that some of the Dauvissat 1er and Grand Crus can have. Still very nice.

  • 2010 Chester's Anvil Gretna Green 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

I think this was the first white rhone blend I've had from Napa. Nose had honeyed pears, apples and slate with great floral lift. Palate was powerful but had great balance with citrus, stone, florals and oak. Very nice stuff.

  • 2008 Les Chais du Vieux Bourg Pinot Noir Côtes du Jura 91 Points

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

As usual, this is a ridiculously exciting pinot noir. Intense cranberry and herbs on the nose immediately give this away as being from Jura. The body is so airy it can seem at times that you're drinking a cranberry cocktail - luckily, to avoid being pedestrian, it has beautiful floral and spice notes that really lift the body.

  • 2007 A.P. Vin Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard 84 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Had that distinctly Californian pinot nose of warm spices, cherry cola and dark fruit. For a Garys' this seemed to have more finesse than I expected, but was still a bit of a bruiser for me.

  • 2008 Antica Terra Pinot Noir 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Plush dark fruit on the nose mingled nicely with some wet earth and spice notes. The body was lush and balanced with firm red fruit, nice floral notes and great minerality. Should age nicely.

  • 2005 Domaine des Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) Moulin-à-Vent 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent

A nice, rustic Moulin-a-Vent with great dusty dark fruit, underbrush and herbs. The palate was, for me, lacking a bit on the minerality front - but that didn't take away from beautifully silky dark fruit and floral notes. Still has a lot of life left, too.

  • 2004 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg 94 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

Incredible aromatics on the nose showcase the regal nature of Cabernet Franc. Beautiful pepper, dark fruit, spice, and cedar tones coalesce into such an incredible package - airy, powerful, elegant and complex. These wines are a steal at $100.

  • 2010 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph 92 Points

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Not much to add to my last review. Incredibly exotic syrah with lots of game, juicy dark fruit, burnt earth and spice. I'm finding it hard to keep my hands off these.
