  Monthly Tuesday group #009: 25 years or older. (By JWS): Beautiful bouquet with a touch of pleasant barnyard and caramel. On the palate red and dark berry fruits, some earth, licorice and leather. Firm red fruit acidity. Overall a mature and still beautiful wine.

  Very nice old Rioja. Fruit still hanging in, but certainly a wine to drink up over the next few years. Had nice old flavors fruit flavors, probably hints of strawberries as the most prominent. Very elegant wine, with a beautiful perfume. My only wish was that the fruit flavors were a little more pronounced. Still, it did open up a bit during the dinner, even though I had given the wine a 30 minute decant prior to the dinner. Still, on the whole a nice wine.

  De color rubí marronoso de capa media, algo turbio y sin brillo, con un fino granulado que no acaba de precipitarse en la base de la botella. Reflejos aranjados, mate, falto de limpieza. Borde amplio, atejado, sin diferencia respecto al menisco.
  
  Un vino más que se parece a otros, casi clónico, que recuerda en todo al Murrieta reserva de 1981. Inicialmente predominan las notas reductivas a lacas, ceras, mueble viejo, anticuario, que van matizándose poco a poco perdiendo intensidad. Fino, abundante en cremosos y vainilla, nuez moscada, lácteos... Mantiene el tipo sin venirse abajo. Van saliendo apuntes térreos a hojarasca, tierra húmeda, hebras de tabaco, setas deshidratadas, junto a un fondo a salvia y laurel. Resultón aunque previsible.
  
  En boca es vivo e incluso podríamos decir que algo duro. Necesitará de más botella para acabar de pulirse.. Mantiene esa brillantez tan murrietana basada en una acidez que no da tregua, picante, fresco, insistente. Hay tostados elegantes y un fondo de fruta roja reducida. Nos ha gustado aunque siempre se espera un poquito más de esta gran bodega. Está claro que los tiempos estaban cambiando. Un vino a medio camino entre el pasado y lo que tendría que llegar en pocos años. Una historia triste!!

  60% tempranillo, 30% garnacha, 10% mazuelo - 13% vol.
  Permanece durante 12 meses en depósitos de hormigón vidriado y acero inoxidable en los que finaliza la fermentación y se estabiliza antes de ser traseagado para ser sometido a crianza en madera. El vino madura 36 meses en barricas usadas de roble americano de 225 litros. Filtrado con membrana antes de ser embotellado. Un mínimo de 24 meses de guarda en botellero en los calados de la bodega antes de ser comercializado.

  Rioja v. Barolo (Manhattan Beach, CA): Funky nose. Very acidic. Some people thought it was ok, but I think there was an oxidation issue. Cork was well-soaked.
