Medium dark purple. Nose of cherries and tar; perhaps a whiff of alcohol. On the palate: dry, fine tannins vie with smooth alcohol-influence. Fruitiness in there somewhere. I'm a big fan of d'Arenberg, but this isn't one of their easiest wines; the alcohol is typical of Grenache, I suppose, but the body is surprisingly thin and the fruit reticent - at this stage at least. (15% but, surprisingly, not too evident: think the tannin and acid balances it just enough.) More than most of their wines, in my experience, this needs food to shine: steak or chops.

Liquid cherries in the glass. Floral with a little spice on both nose and palate. Medium bodied. Long length but most of the fruit and spice seem to disappear into something bland and indiscernible. Pleasant wine all the same.

Unscrew and pour. I had a little bit of mixed feelings on this. Nice cherry and floral on the nose and palate. Finish was long but uneventful. Update - Day 2 brought on even a deeper aroma and much more depth on the finish. Bumbed from 89 to 90

A bit too pleasing and sweet for my taste, but nevertheless a good value wine.
