One of the best value Merlots, from grapes scattered across vineyards in Columbia Valley in Washington. Still opaque black at 11 years old. Very savory aromas of black cherry, black currants, and black plum. Gloriously caressing and concentrated. Has aged into an increasingly lush and delicious Merlot, with nothing thin, harsh, or astringent. Drink anytime, but will remain superb over the next 5 years. Includes 20% Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Northstar is a Walla Walla Winery that specializes in high quality Merlot. This is their relatively affordable release that comes from a blend across vineyards in different places with some from purchased grapes. This 10 year old wine remains opaque with an inch pour. The nose is filled with enticing cherry fruit. The mouth entry is an utterly enjoyable combination of richness with mouth watering black cherry fruit with a velvet texture. The swallow reveals a spike of refreshing acidity and supportive tannin that has no harshness. Overall, a beautiful example of how Merlot from Washington State can make a wine as concentrated and ageworthy as Cabernet Sauvignon, drink well from release with a caressing mouth feel and delicious fruit, and show no sign of decline 10 years old.

(Northstar Merlot Columbia Valley) Initially fairly quiet on the nose. As it opens up, shows oak spices, a hint of mocha, and light red and black fruit. Exceptionally well balanced on the palate with lithe fruit and silky oak buffeted by polished tannins. An exemplary Washington State Merlot. 76% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Aged in French (70%) and American (30%) oak (65% new). 14.7% alcohol. 10,000 cases produced.
