1974 California Tasting (Cafe Boulud): Best nose of the 4 1974 Zins we tasted tonight. Elegant (as one would expect from Ridge). Similar vibrancy of fruit as the Burgess. A bit more "old world" in style than the Burgess.

1974 RIDGE FIDDLETOWN AMADOR COUNTY ZINFANDEL [2 btls] - Paul Draper, iconic winemaker extraordinaire, called this and the 78` the best he ever produced from this vineyard; in addition to its almost pure purple color, most notable was very interesting tertiary dried cherry and plum fruit in the nose and taste along with a hit of coconut coming in by mid palate; decent and viable; a good start with 37 more to come.

Davis visit: Tasted with Paul Draper at UC Davis reception. Paul and I seemed to enjoy this much more than many others, who pronounced it merely "old." It is certainly past its peak and the tannins have mostly faded, but it is still showing quite nicely, with fruit and bramble.

Suprisingly this was still holding. Had become bricked and very port-like but was very drinkable and even still pleasant on day 2!
