  • The 2007 J J Confuron Romanee Saint Vivant is drinking beautifully today, showing slightly developed / tertiary flavours of savoury dark cherries and a touch of barnyard. Dark fruited with a nice lift, sweet Vosne spices with a good dose of oak toast. Destemmed style, high acidity and fragrant aromatics. Vosne Romanee Grand Cru, 2010? (92/100)

Full and rich nose. Very spicy and deep. Almost coffee toast paired with sandalwood. Red and dark fruit intermingled. A hint om mature forest floor. Very appealing and hedonistic.
Dense, full and concentrated palate. Almost cedary toast oaky. Dark fruit very sumptous. Nuts and gun-powder. Rich and powerful, perhaps a bit over-done? Fruit concentration and good grip makes this a splendid 2007.
My guess: Richebourg Gros F&S. Wrong. A very hedonistic showing with perhaps a bit heavy oaking. But that should reside with time. Not as subtle and elegant as one would have expected from RSV, but I guess it is the Vosne power that shines through.

  • Colour of moderate depth with brownish edges creeping well inwards - belied the superb wine that followed.

An elegant but very complex nose, showed a myriad of tightly interwoven and subtle yet penetrating spices, delicate but pervasive forest floor characters, and lovely brambly characters. Top class.

Palate followed the nose: very elegant, very complex, beautifully integrated and with excellent depth (albeit without the power of a great year). Lovely balance; beautiful, refined yet penetrating tannins right to the end of a long, lingering finish. Grand Cru elegance + complexity! Rezy13 nailed it with his "hedonistic enjoyment" comment below, albeit it is not a wine for a noisy, distracted table.

  • Duller red; lovely stewed red cherry with spice, orange peel, mineral, transitioning into secondary phase, nice weight, hedonistic enjoyment.

  • Needed at least one hour to open. Bags of stewed fruit, caramel, earth, Asian spice. Nose of forest floor and mushroom that took longer to open. Very long finish 30 seconds or so. Very complex and classy with a velvety finish and soft tannins.
