  • Popped and poured an ounce to check it's willingness to cooperate out of the bottle. Deep, dark red in the glass; nearly opaque. Quite a bit of fine sediment but nothing off-putting. Alcohol on the nose and showing signs of recalcitrance so we poured the first glass through the Venturi; this gave it the jump start that it needed. Black berries and blue berries were now showing through in the bouquet along with a wisp of fresh, cracked tellicherry pepper. After some time, alcohol has dissipated on the nose and this Syrah (Shiraz as JAQK calls it for some reason) is really starting to impress now. Nice structure with the fruit and spice found in the bouquet becoming equal parts evident on the palate. Strong tannins but nothing throwing it out of balance and wrapped up with a nice twenty second finish. A really nice inaugural effort for this producer (though with Craig Maclean in charge of winemaking, I wouldn't expect anything less). A bit more cellar time would likely bring an even greater reward.

  • A few Saturday afternoon tasting notes...12/19/2009: WIML82

Tasted December 19, 2009 at a retail tasting.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of brett (on a first release? Did they import it from Burgundy?) , currants, boysenberry and a bit of plum. Flavorof boysenberry and maybe some red plum. Light to medium acidity, tannins and body. Short finish. Drink now.

  • smoke on the nose. meaty raspberry fruit. nice black pepper and fruit on the palate. Why name this a Shiraz, when it really comes across totally Syrah in character. What a stupid discussion to start with a wine that displays such contradiction. Well, not really contradiction, just evoking an old tired discussion.
At the same time this was my favorite wine so far.
