After a tasting at Poderi Oddero, this came across as immediately more oak-treated with distinctive hints of coffee bean and toast, fruit compote and spice. It misses the elegance and floral panache of traditional botti-aging and initially came across as somewhat monolithic and uninteresting. However, after about half an hour it started to unfurl, with more delicate floral complexity on display. Saved by the bell - in the end a good wine but I do wonder whether Massolino overdoes its oak treatment, which great vineyards in this area probably don’t need much of.
Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): Winner of the tasting hands down and probably a contender for a top wine in the trip. Darker note, almost this hint of metallic. Very pretty. A gentle wine that still has a lot of power. 50+ year old vineyard. The elegance here jumps out at you. Surpised how lovely and certainly a wine I want to follow for the lifetime.
