  • 89+ on first night. Pale brick red center, brownish at the edges, sour cherry, saddle leather, mushroom, hit of earthiness, and herbs on the nose. Sour cherry and raspberries, bright raspberry jam and fresh berry acidity, not a lot of additional depth save for a hint of some forest floor and dried herbs. Medium long finish from finely grained tannins.

Held up well on night two but actually melded together a bit more making it slightly less interesting. Certainly still good, but maybe a half point off.

The 2016 vintage turned me onto this and my previous recollections of the 2017, a year or more ago was that is was drinking harsh, out of balance, and hot, this seems to have mellowed and matured a fair amount and is drinking nicely now. Perhaps additional secondary and tertiary flavors will come forward in the years to come, but at less than $20 a bottle, I don’t know that it has that in it, which is fair.

  • Light in color. Brownish around the rim. Looks older than 2017. Ruby color center. Light color.

First impression on the nose was Flintstone vitamins. Some acidity and slightly tannic.

After some air, it developed a very florar aroma. Roses and other fragrant flowers.

  • Kirkland wines can be hit or miss. This one is the former. Medium in body with requisite Nebbiolo characteristics of sour cherry and leather in a long moderately complex finish. Very ready to drink and at an excellent QPR for a quality Borolo.

  • Continuing my exploration of the Nebbiolo grape and Barolo in particular, tonight I opened a 2017 Kirkland Signature Barolo.
While the rest decants, I poured a glass for immediate perusal.

A milder expression than the Garabel, the floral and red berry notes are only hinted at present. The moderate leather grip starts mid palate and continues on through a lingering peppered finish.

I hope it blossoms as it decants, but as it stands now, I am giving it one point less than my initial rating for the Garabel.

After a couple hours decanting, it balanced out and the fruit and spice notes opened a bit more, but it was still muted in comparison to other Barolo's I've had. The flavors are right, but the structure wasn't as robust.
Still, it was an enjoyable bottle with decent QPR.
