Motley Cru does Off the Beaten Path (San Marcos, CA): This was a very nice wine (I think it got at least one WOTN vote), that showed correctly for a Syrah from California. Bit of bacon, dark blue and black fruits, plenty of heft and probably enough stuffing to age another 10 years. (PE: 91)

This is really packed, but has a leanness that really focusses the palate. Very dark purple. Loads of mostly blue (but also some blackberry) fruits/berries on the nose with floral spice and vanilla/oak elements. Not much smoke, meat or blood. Huge fruit on the palate, but the tannin/acid backbone keeps it from being jammy. Also a distinct minerality and a complex finish. I plan to age the rest and see what develops on this wonderful chassis.

very, very young. jammy upfront red fruit and enjoyable in spite of its youth. grade was given on the come, but some bottle age should really up the score.

not very memorable: little finish. ok at best. need to try second bottle and pay more attention.
