Upon opening was tight with cassis on the nose. After several hours of decanting it really opened. Bordeaux level fruit and earthiness. Some sous bois.

Drank after only a short decant. Drinking nicely, but still coming together. This Gravitas will likely continue to improve over the next couple of years (likely even longer).

A blend from some of the serious grape varietals of 2017, this nearly 5-year old beauty is one to enjoy with quality people and food. With an almost opaque color, the fruit forwardness is very transparent with rich blackberries and a hint of cigar. Let it sit for about an hour and relish the aromas filling the glass before that initial sip. The flavor packs some good dark chocolate and a little bit of spice here and there. The acids are moderate, and the tannins are still firm, but not overpowering. Sitting around for five years, it is drinking quite well now. Hold if you wish, but do not miss out on this jewel right now if you can spare an extra bottle. Worthy of enjoyment today. Santé!

I am just not feeling this wine. It is okay in an absolute sense -- and expensive for the price. I'd rather drink a $30 Bordeaux from France and have $ left over. Maybe better with some time and/or if you received it as a gift?

Tasted with Wine Maker Ben Calais - I captured some of his comments on this wine: wine was aged 34-months in new French oak barrels. It's a blend of only the best barrels from 2017 from Calias. He felt the wine had aromas of blackberry, cigar boxes and leather and flavors of spice & dark chocolate. I'm not sure I smelt or tasted all these but I love Calais' Gravitas (2015 & 2017 vintages).
