  • Dr. Johnson: Sir, a woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.

Thus I commence a note on an 11-year old Mondeuse from Savoie, which would have stumped me blind for a month and I could easily have mistaken for aged Burgundy or Cru Beaujolais. Who knew? Not me obviously.

The color might be the only tell, a pretty pale red. The nose mixes cranberry and sour cherry with graphite minerality and an earthy, sous bois note. Light to medium bodied (12% ABV) but not wimpy, the graphite, earth and perhaps an herbal, rose petal note underpinning the fading fruit, and lending an air of gravitas to the relatively light, grainy tannins on the finish. Mayhap running a bit low on fruit at this stage, but it's still got game.

Is it a Magnin or a Magnien? Like I said, you coulda fooled me.

  • Patient swirling and sniffing reveals some pretty fruit - black cherry, plum. Even on day two it’s still quite simple on the nose. And the palate, while balanced and correct, is insipid. There’s just not a lot going on. I like how clean it is and I like the mouthfeel, but there’s just not enough here. Doesn’t feel like it’s over the hill, perhaps a weak vintage? In any case, disappointing, especially relative to every other mondeuse that I’ve had.

  • A Neal Rosenthal wine, as such I was very excited to have the opportunity to drink a glass. This was my first experience with the mondeuse grape and I was intrigued. The wine had a rustic aspect, there was a smokey, gamey note to the nose and there was a pleasant acidity on the palate. I felt the wine needed a bit more air, and I would like to drink again. Tasted at Bachelor Farmer in Minneapolis, which by the way has a wine list for the geekiest of wine enthusiasts.
