Tart and “foresty”…not quite smokey but old world style… sour cherry… very nice. That said, Phelps has overpriced their Pinots… solid and enjoyable but $80… better choices at $80 (and comparable choices at $50-60).
But I did enjoy it 😀

Almost a year to the day from the last time I tried this wine. Opened two hours prior to consumption. The nose was all fruit, the palate was cherry, plum, some pipe tobacco and spices. The finish was long and full.

A very robust style: this single vineyard-designated Pinot Noir had more complexity than I expected. Definitely fruit forward; black cherry marmalade and strawberry rhubarb, then vanilla and warm spices combined with kola nut and a heap of limestone. Very dark and more tannin than usual for a Sonoma Pinot. I intended to pair this Pinot with baked mushrooms and sautéed spinach, but it stood up to my Fiorentina steak and garlic / rosemary potatoes. Impressive!

Nice fruit and acid, but rough tannins and bitterness that remains in its long finish. Surprising.
